Yes, his Shah Bano & shilanyas steps were both blunders, but even if they hadn't happened, Ayodhya movement was fast gaining ground amongst Hindus.
It was BJP's electoral trump card.
Congress was THAT strong.
Even when they lost power in 1977, they bounced back strongly in 1980.
The only way to defeat them now was to pander to the majority (80% of pop).
Enter VHP & Ram Janmabhoomi.
The rest is history.
Shah Bano happened in 1985.
Ayodhya movement started in right earnest in 1983.
Aap chronology samjhiye.
Or to defend his shilanyas decision in 1989.
They were both wrong.
But neither of them were the reason for the Ayodhya movement. At the most, they provided further fuel to an already raging fire.
Ayodhya was happening anyway.
"VHP was working on Ram Mandir since 1983".
Straight from the horse's mouth.

There was a Rath Yatra in Sitamarhi, Bihar in 1983 for Ram Janmabhoomi.
This was all VHP's work (obviously with RSS/BJP political goals in mind).
They couldn't have defeated Cong without playing the Hindu card.

Was horrified, watching it all unfolding in front of me.
Yes, we'd had communal riots/tension earlier too (in Hyd/Ahd/Bhiwandi etc), but I'd never seen a STRUCTURAL attempt to DIVIDE ppl ACROSS THE COUNTRY on religious lines.
I used to see bhagwa flags, hear Ram Mandir slogans - I thought they were just random protests.
Didn't realise they were part of a well-orchestrated POLITICAL strategy to pander to the majority.
Cong could've easily done that since 1947, without doing ANYTHING ELSE.
And could've won election after election.
They chose not to.
BJP, with its RSS roots, grabbed that space.
That it had to wait till 2014, is only cos of Cong.
You can blame Cong for many things (and I do!) - but not for trying to keep all Indians together.
This is precisely what RSS/BJP hate the most abt Cong.
The ethos of India began changing only in the 1980s.
Thanks to VHP/BJP.
RSS resurgence.
Pandering to Hindus, stoking anti-Muslim sentiment.
These were the real tukde tukde gang.
