Brick Lane was already changing for a variety of reasons pre-COVID as tastes changed as well as external factors like access to staff
COVID will accelerate change
This has been the tradition of the East End, take in a new generation of
1/
The same thing happened to the Jewish community here & before them the Huguenots
Part of the Chinese community in Limehouse moved to west end
This is natural & in part
2/
As subsequent generations become settled & move up the education & income brackets they move away
A new generation of migrants replace them
Today those migrants come from all of the world
3/
But change can be uncomfortable especially if it happens quickly because of COVID
Role of government should be to help with change
Not
4/
But help people to adapt to it not pretend it wont happen
So Brick Lane should if possible maintain some curry houses but also appeal to wider tastes/interests to ensure jobs &
5/
But the wider area can still be attractive & enticing with a good mix of activities, interests, food & cultures
That keeps people in jobs, keeps the £ coming in for the Council but allows families to evolve with the next generation
6/
TH Council needs to work with & support businesses, if for no other reason that business rates is an important source of our income
But that is true of the whole of TH now not just Brick Lane
