We need to get to the bottom of what's happening at the US Postal Service ASAP.

Whether it's intentional or not, whether it's a reality or perception, people are hearing an awful lot about problems with the mail ahead of an election where mail will be critical

Marylanders Fed Up With Delays Go to Post Office To Get Their Mail.

"I'm fine getting mail once or twice a week, but I don't get any and I need the medicines for my grandson"

Last month, in rural Michigan:

Small Business Owner Calling For Change Within the U.S. Postal Service

“I’ve got probably 8-10 cases open with the post office right now, and probably the sum of six to $16,000 worth of product"

Mail Delays Are Frustrating Philly Residents

"Valerie Rice said her mail has arrived only once every two weeks in July. She receives medication for her 25-year-old grandson, who has autism, through the mail. But now it doesn’t come on time"

Also in Philly story:

"Donald Bullock said he has gone three weeks without his mail — leaving 71 letters and three packages, including two paychecks, sitting inside the Overbrook post office, according to his USPS mail alerts"

Chicago Customers Warn USPS Mail Delivery Delays Could Cause Credit Issues

"Vicky Lee [...] said missing mail is jeopardizing her good credit. In a stack of mail she picked up from her post office, Lee found a late charge from a credit card company"

Mail Problems Mount For Northwest Ohio Customers

"In the last 10 days, Sally Chojnacki says she’s only found letters and first-class mail in her mailbox once."

Also in Ohio story:

"Carriers are saying the US Postal Service is not allowing overtime.

"If they hit their 8 hours and there is still mail in the truck, it goes back to the station."

Additional from Ohio story:

"The president of the local letter carrier union said this week some routes aren’t being filled and they’re not being told why"

You can find these stories about USPS all over the country. The Post Office story *is* getting coverage at a national level.

But everyone needs to understand what individual Americans are experiencing themselves and hearing from local media at a local level.

Put aside for a moment whether your community has experienced mail ballot issues. If you have the perception that the Post Office is messed up, we have a huge problem.

How can we address?

Congressional oversight, underway, is important.

But we desperately need great journalism, at every level from local to national, to help separate reality from perception, and understand what forces are shaping the reality.

If you're interested in more context, this @nytimes The Daily from May a good start

But please do not, do NOT, underestimate how important local news coverage is to this story, and to what extent is shaping Americans' views on the reliability of the Postal Service at this moment.
