.@SeattleSupt now discussing the Seattle Public Schools' proposed remote learning plan.

"What your children experienced last spring was an emergency response."

First few statements seem to be in response to pushback about how much live instruction time is included in the example schedules.

"I’ve heard over and over and over again that families want more live learning."
Juneau stressed the schedules are just examples. And if the screen time seems excessive, she said people should call the State Board of Education and State Ed department and ask for more flexibility in how many instructional hours that school district provide

The district has enough devices on order to give every student a device. They ordered from a few different vendors to improve

She thanks staff and Amazon for getting computers to students last spring.
On internet: 300 families received free internet/wifi hotspots, and more hotspots are on order.

"This notion of connectivity is bigger than any school district. We need to be advocating and demanding for connectivity for all from our state and federal governments."
Juneau says she's "not opposed" to the outdoor school proposal that the School Board is pushing. But says she wants the district to focus on getting good at remote learning, which is essentially the same reaction as the teacher's union

Unclear if teachers can use their classrooms for live instruction. Juneau says that's a bargaining topic with the teacher's union, and doesn't share more.
A few other things she's unsure about:
- whether Pre-K kids will get devices
- if parents can opt their kids out of a certain live instruction time slot
- if the district can provide flexibility in scheduling (late afternoon/evening classes)
Not a ton more detail offered on specialized services for students with disabilities and English learners. District has posed the possibility of these students coming back into school buildings for services and instruction that are really hard to replicate virtually
I caution everyone reading this thread that none of these things are set in stone. The teachers union has a lot of power in these decisions, both here and nationally, and the two sides are still in bargaining. School Board needs to also approve a plan on Aug. 12.

When will the district and teacher's union finish negotiating? I'm not sure, but hopefully soon. Union was hoping to conclude at end of July. Management and labor in Seattle schools have deliberated much longer when the stakes were much lower.
