One of the key bits in this headline is "the seat his family held for a half century".
Among the constellation of problems beset our country and its governance, this is one of them.

Such reigns were never meant to be. It is a corruption of its own.
One of the core issues the constitution tried to address was the nature, structure, and management of power. How to organize power so it could be effective for the public weal, but not so powerful for itself. So the founders took on perhaps one of the
deepest aspects of human nature. The insatiable desire for more. More power. The essence of Constitutional principles is the structural definitions of power intending to create possibility & change & break up accumulations of power.
But It only works when it does. And it can
be subverted, as we have experienced throughout our history. And we have also experienced the system working as it should, every so often, when it enables the peaceful disruption of dynasties.

It seems we are entering into a time of rearrangement of the old ways.
