The famous U.K. communist editor Douglas Hyde (1911-1996) was assigned to infiltrate and smear the Catholic Church and their social teachings during the war, fell in love with the writings of G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc, ended up converting to Catholicism and Distributism.
"Hyde’s conversion in '48 was headline news in the daily press in Britain, a blow to the Communist cause, gave Distributism a new lease of life. Asked at a lecture what his politics were now he held up copies of Rerum Novarum, Quadragesimo Anno and said, 'These are my politics.'"
"The colossal satisfaction of spending hours quietly digging in solitude or kneeling weeding for hour after hour. The chance to think. Yes, that was it. The chance to think for the sake of thinking. Not ‘applying’ someone else’s thought to some line of action."
— Douglas Hyde
