The famous U.K. communist editor Douglas Hyde (1911-1996) was assigned to infiltrate and smear the Catholic Church and their social teachings during the war, fell in love with the writings of G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc, ended up converting to Catholicism and Distributism.

Ueno Sakuragi Atari was a tiny plot on an awkward back street in Tokyo with three old houses. It was supposed to become a parking lot. Instead it was renovated and turned into shops, performance spaces, bars, bakery, etc. employing a dozen people and attracting thousands weekly.
Imagine taking a prospective parking lot and turning it into something so beautiful that TV and movie companies rent it as a shooting location, and models and photographers flock there for photo sessions? Without a vision none of this would have happened.
In today's world of head splitting ugliness and greed, building and protecting an oasis or springhead of beauty is practically a subversive, contra-revolutionary act of the highest order.

One of my favorite trees, the Tabu, or Tabunoki (Machilus thunbergii), also known as Japanese Bay Tree, native to Japan, SW China, Taiwan, Korea. It is a fast growing hard wood related to camphor trees. Often planted in shrines and temples as a guardian tree.
Its edible fruit (tiny but resembling avocado) is popular with birds, and according to myth it also attracts benevolent demons. Maybe the birds keep insects away from the temples and buildings it is guarding?
Despite being a hardwood it grows fast and its branches are exceptionally strong and wide spreading, making it an excellent windbreaker, often found in parks near oceans. It usually grows to 20m but some can grow twice as tall.

In Japan, a "sugidama" is a famous talisman of cedar leaves in the form of a ball hung up in front of a brewery to celebrate the starting of a new batch of sake. At first it is lush and green, but over the months it turns a mellow brown, aging at the same pace as the sake.
With roots to antiquity, today the sugidama is so well known as a sign for sake that many liquor stores, bars, and restaurants also hang it over their entrance to attract customers. An elegant and charming way of marketing.
It is said that the cedar is the special tree of the gods of sake, but there is also a theory that cedar leaves were traditionally hung in front of doors and windows for the inherent antimicrobial properties of this plant: it stopped the brewing batch from going bad.
