Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) did not even have a surname. He were from the Hashim family of the Quraysh tribe. Shri Ram's surname was also not there. The surname is based on the Gharana, tribes & region. Anyone can change their surname at any time.
Sometimes the surname is based on their works and deeds. Patel means Bada or Rasuk Dar. The people of the village call Patel the growing people. My grandfather has earned a nickname. All my grandfather brothers have different surnames.
