It has been a very difficult 5 months for the US. Here is a bit of a review looking back at national deaths per million.

The "second wave" has shown a possible peak, which if continued, would reflect an increase of 2 deaths per million per day over the lowest point in July.
And a comparison of cases vs deaths (on two vertical axis). The strong decrease in cases is hopefully a good indicator that the second wave peak is behind us.
Lastly, here is a view of cases vs deaths on one vertical axis, to provide another perspective.
