State of play @FoxReports:

Self-imposed deadline arrives with no sign of a stimulus deal

Congress is gone. McConnell has said the Senate isn't technically in recess.. but most members have returned home

Projections for an actual deal are no better than they were 10 days ago
Multiple aides involved in the talks have told CNN over the last few days that they are now eying the government funding deadline as perhaps the only real remaining trigger for action if things continue to flounder.

That deadline is September 31.
That is more than two months after the expiration of the enhanced unemployment benefits.

It is the worst case scenario, but the fact people are considering that timeline reveals just how bad things have gotten. @FoxReports
It’s true urgency can shift quickly on CapHill. But, that is much harder to do when members are away and physically keeping their distance from each other..That's not to say something couldn't change.

One year since a horrific day 1/6/21. Here are some photos & videos I took at the US Capitol on the day..

Grateful to the great CNN hill team, hill press corps, the USCP and all those who kept us safe

(Thread)
The first video I took was around 1pm of staff walking the electoral college votes to the House chamber for a joint session to begin certifying Biden's win; Former VP Pence was asked if he plans to overturn the election results
The next image on my phone was around 2:20pm after the Capitol and Senate invaded by rioters and we were told to lock down.

We locked ourselves in our press booth in the Senate, I stood against the door, @mkraju was reporting live on CNN

Menendez condemns his colleague GOP Sen. Ron Johnson for his recent controversial comments saying:

"I get no one likes to be called racist, but sometimes there's just no other way to describe the use of bigoted tropes that for generations have threatened Black lives"
Johnson defended his cmnts that he might have been concerned for his safety on Jan 6 if the rioters were affiliated with Black Lives Matter/ Antifa instead of being a largely White pro-Trump crowd, telling reporters they were “innocuous” and "there was nothing racial" about it
Menendez (D-NJ) said he took no pleasure in coming to the Senate floor to criticize his colleague, but decided to address the Wisconsin Republican's comments because “you’re either going to speak the truth or fail to do justice to the values you hold dear.”

ALL 48 Democratic senators and 2 Independent senators have been vaccinated against Covid-19

Most GOP senators are vaccinated, but at least 4 Republicans senators have said they are not, including: Sens. Ron Johnson, Mike Braun, Rick Scott & Rand Paul
Braun says he would get vaccinated "at some point down the road" but he still wants to “gather a little more information” on the vaccines. He said he's in no rush to get it despite being eligible to do so in his home state for the last several wks.. but he urges others to get it
Scott’s office pointed to his Dec statement saying he would wait to get the vaccine so essential workers and vulnerable populations could receive it first, per @jeremyherb

Scott, Johnson and Paul all had reported having coronavirus last year

“A number of Republicans just weren't listening, you could see,” said Sen. Sherrod Brown, recalling watching some of his colleagues’ reactions on the floor during the chilling video presentation
For the Republicans that were “actually paying attention, you couldn't help but being pretty shaken by this, pretty sobered by this," Brown said.

Sen. Warren said she tried to make eye contact with GOP senators as the disturbing footage was shown, but they “wanted to look off"
“It was so hard to watch people who were terrified... under threat & then to try and make eye contact with Republicans who just wanted to look off,” Warren said

“The Republicans who stand with Donald Trump are his enablers and they must be stopped," she added

Trump’s lawyer David Schoen, an Orthodox Jew, said he did not wear his yarmulke on the Senate floor during his arguments in the impeachment trial because he wasn’t sure if it “was appropriate.”

“I just wasn’t sure if it was appropriate, frankly..I didn’t want to offend anyone.”
Asked why wearing a yarmulke would offend anyone, Schoen said he doesn’t know it would offend anyone but “it’s just an awkward thing and people stare at it.”
Alan Frumin, a former senate parliamentarian, and Schumer’s office both told CNN they are not aware of any rules against wearing a yarmulke on the Senate floor.
