In a time of stunningly awful political things, this current obsession with the small boats across the channel may be the most depressing of all.
It shows our nation, our politicians, our media - yes, I’m looking at you @BBCNews in particular - to be abysmally narrow minded, xenophobic and nasty, to a new level.
It shows almost as much stupidity as it does nastiness. Things like @pritipatel’s plan for using the navy is about as bad a bit of politics as we’ve had in decades. The navy knows that. I suspect even Patel knows that. And yet it’s lapped up by media and people.
Are we that stupid? It seems so. Are we that nasty? It seems so. Are we that narrow minded? It seems so.
And before people say ‘don’t use ‘we’’, look at the bloody polls.
