Coffee With a Cop (Pt 1)

A closer look at @Starbucks-hosted events that give Seattle residents the opportunity for a friendly chat w/ some of SPD’s most brutal, racist and dishonest officers

(THREAD)

(1/12)
Coffee w/ a Cop (CWAC) started in Cali in 2011. It has expanded nationwide w/ support from the DoJ as well as funds from companies like Target and Axon, producer TASERs/bodycams & @SeattlePF donor.

Their mission: Breaking down barriers between police & citizens they serve
2/12
Since 2015, @Starbucks has been a major partner. In one year, it hosted more than 100 CWAC events around the country. Below: Starbucks’ @SeattlePF board member Sean Greenlee at a CWAC event.

CWAC provides citizens the chance to meet officers like Lora Alcantara. Some SPD officers are racist. Some are liars.

Alcantara happens to be both.

(4/12)
Alcantara was investigated by the OPA in 2015 for an incident that happened in 2013. Alcantara was caught on her in-car camera audio calling the suspect as a “f*cking negro.”

In her OPA interview, Alcantara insisted she had merely used the word as a "racial descriptor," adding that she “was married to a person of color” and as someone with the maiden name Fernandez, “considers [herself] a person of color.”

(7/12)
“A person of color”

(8/12)
While investigating the racial slur, the OPA turned up a second policy violation. Alcantara lied about a member of a news crew digging thru the suspect’s abandoned car. It was plainly contradicted by her dashcam

(9/12)
The presumed penalty for dishonesty is termination. However the incident happened 3yrs 1 mo. before the 2nd investigation, so the deadline for discipline set in the SPOG contract had passed.

She got 5 days suspension for the racial slur, no punishment for the lie.

(10/12)
Because of her racial slur, the prosecutor’s office declined charges.

And as a result of her dishonesty, Alcantara is now on the King County Brady list, meaning prosecutors are obligated to tell the defense about her history if she is ever a witness in a trial.

(11/12)
At the time of the incident, Alcantara was only an officer. By the time it was investigated she had been promoted to sergeant. She is currently a Lieutenant making $143k a year.
