1. As genuine criticisms of Yaqeen Institute are getting buried amidst the relentless nitpicking of Daniel Haqiqatjou.

This thread highlights one criticism, their links and collaboration with the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) industry.

What you'll find may shock you.
2. Yaqeen's 'engagement philosophy' has its limits, and their work with establishment figures on CVE is where many reasonable Muslims would draw the line.

Here's an example:
3. Julio Rivera is a paid employee at Yaqeen who is Director of Research Operations.

Who is Julio Rivera?

According to Yaqeen's website:

"...Julio has conducted research with institutes and government at the intersection of Middle East politics and security studies." Image

4. Seems unremarkable.

Except, not when you read Julio Rivera's own employment history on his LinkedIn profile.

Carefully read Julio's profile and decipher what his employment with the US Military entailed. Image
5. Julio assisted US Generals in military operations in Syria.

Here are excerpts from the same LinkedIn profile. Image

6. Julio was "tracking military trends" & "briefed senior military officials... including four star generals".

He also "participated in the development of US military contingency operations... during the Syrian conflict".

Here, Julio 'likes' #OneTeamOneFight

Whose fight? Image
7. Julio claims his role at Yaqeen is about "what nurtures conviction and inspires contribution in the hearts of Muslims in the United States and around the world".

With his military and CVE roots with CPOST, this is word play for "terrorism".

What is CPOST?
8. We find that Yaqeen's collaboration extends beyond employing people with links to US military adventurism in the Muslim lands.

They work with organisations part-funded by the US Military, such as the 'Chicago Project on Security and Threats' or CPOST.

Learn about it: Image

9. Robert Pape, the Director of CPOST, is an 'expert' on suicide bombings and steers public discourse on 'homegrown terrorism'.

Listen to Pape arguing how the US should pursue "a middle ground" by using Air and Naval Power.

The US does this now with terrible loss of life.
10. Yaqeen's President Omar Soleiman, like Dalia Mogahed, are normalising Muslim collaboration with leading proponents of CVE.

Do you want this normalised?

Here is Omar with Robert Paper Director of CPOST, and Yaqeen promising future collaboration. Image
11. Yaqeen's disturbing links with proponents of CVE and employing people involved in US military campaigns in Muslim lands is unbefitting of an Orthodox Islamic Institute seeking the respect of Muslims.

One must ask: how far does this all go?
12. Consider Yaqeen's general trajectory so far.

- Working with proponents of counter-terrorism
- Supporting LGBT causes under Jonathan Brown's 'RACCIO approach'
- Promoting 'an acceptable version' of evolution

May Allah guide us. Ameen.

[Thread, Part 5 – Response to @ProjectAndalus]

1. How reassuring that no 'collaboration [with CIA-linked CPOST] ever materialised'.

Should one had been offered, would Yaqeen have refused it in principle?

Let us look at his disgraceful revision of Julio's work. t.co/K8dOBLP3dD
2. Asadullah wants us to believe that Julio's role in the US Department of Defence was to 'help the Syrian civilian population' that produced no value for military generals.

You would expect such a whitewash to come from the US State Department, not a fellow at Yaqeen.
3. Perhaps not unexpected from someone who prides his own 'counter-terrorism' work, who openly 'reports' Muslims to authorities, and has the 'FBI on speed dial'.

A reminder to Islamic organisations and individuals seeking to benefit from the Counter Terrorism (CT) and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) industry.

[Thread, Part 4 – Questions for Sh Omar Suleiman and Yaqeen]

1. @omarsuleiman504’s emotional and carefully crafted ‘clarification’ continues to evoke questions.

Judge for yourself whether the questions are reasonable, and demand answers from OS and Yaqeen.
2. No one accuses Yaqeen of 'taking CVE funding' or ‘supporting its framework', but there are reasons to believe it has engaged in CT/CVE in some capacity.

If not, then why did Yaqeen seek future collaboration with CPOST, an established player in the CVE (and CT) industry?
3. Facts about CPOST:

- funded by the US Department of Defence
- has the ex-CIA Deputy Director as a board member
- partners with CVE and CT think tanks globally
- featured in the Peace and Security Funding Index
- director advocates for a US hegemonic military doctrine Image

[Thread, Part 3 - Response to those justifying Yaqeen's CVE collaboration]

1. Ibrahim Abdul-Saleem, Yaqeen collaborating with a leading CVE proponent that has the ex-CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell as its board member, cannot be explained or justified by false analogies.
2. You gave the example of Abdul-Qahir, who researched US militarism in Afghanistan and presented it to Western institutions, suggesting similarities to Yaqeen's work with CPOST. Image
Image
3. Your essential argument is that since past/current Islamic groups 'work' with the US military, it would have been easy to criticise them at the time as Yaqeen is now being criticised for its work with CPOST, rendering such criticisms invalid.

[Thread, Part 2 - Questions for Yaqeen]

1. Huthaifa Shqeirat, it's for Yaqeen to answer why it collaborates with an organisation deeply rooted in counter-intelligence and the military.
2. CPOST's board includes the ex-CIA Deputy Director, Michael Morell, who during his tenure, ran the murderous drone and covert ops in the Muslim World, killing thousands, including Abdulrahman Anwar Al-Awlaki, a 16 year old US Muslim citizen in 2011. Image

3. Yaqeen collaborated with CPOST in March 2017, when the ex-CIA Dep. Director was already an established board member.

Furthermore, it's inconceivable for Yaqeen to not know of CPOST Director Robert Pape's long-held hawkish strategy in the Muslim World.
