Why, it's #WyrdWednesday! I must ask, have you ever heard of The Hexham Heads? Well, in 1972 a pair of boys dug up the stone heads in the back garden of their home in Hexham, not far from Newcastle. Almost immediately, strange a-doings began in their home...

Furniture began to be moved when no one was present and smaller items would be launched into the air by invisible hands. This activity would even be felt next door. But there was more than just low-level poltergeist shenigans going on...

One of the adult residents next door reported being scared half to death by 'a large half-man, half-sheep' walking about her house. A strange light hovering in place over the spot where the heads were found was also spotted.

Enter one Dr Anne Ross, an expert in Celtic artefacts. She took the heads home for study, but it seems she also took the phenomena home too! One night she witnessed the mysterious half-man, half-sheep creature. In fact it pushed past her and jumped down the stairs.

Dr Ross had the heads removed from her home, but claimed to still be able to sense the presence associated with them. She believed them to have been created a long time ago to ward off evil spirits, but somehow they seemed to have gained one instead.

All very spooky, as I'm sure you'll agree! However, some time later one of the previous occupants of the house in Hexham came forward, saying he had made the heads in the 1950's as toys for his daughter, and they'd been buried in the garden way back when.

But, in the words of Dr Ross: 'I do not maintain that the heads are Celtic in origin; but that they have in some way drawn to themselves powers such as were attributed to real [i.e. severed human] or manufactured heads in the pre-Christian world'

To top all this mystery off, the heads came into the possession of an unnamed individual who promptly disappeared, taking the heads with him! I fear we may never get to the bottom of this one...

For what it's worth, the half-man, half-sheep creature that was spotted sounds a little like a Wulver. However, I thought they were generally shy creatures who would help people out in a pinch? (Probably wrong on that!) Plus there's classic poltergeist tropes going on here.

Once again, it's a big fat 'who knows?' from me! There's bits online about this one, so check them out if you want to know more. Or just grab a shovel & get digging, who knows what weird trinkets you might find!

(Actual weirdness of trinkets may vary).

Keep it Wyrd! 👻
