Stargate SG1: Season 3 Episode 16 "Urgo" (Dir Peter DeLuise) Airdate Jan 26, 2000

Daniel Rating: It's a goofy episode. Next season, Daniel does better at goofiness. But he does do a very important moral stance thing so Useful

Ep Summary: SG-1 loses track of time after going through the Stargate but back on the base they acquire a new taste for life. Turns out it's brought on by an implant on their brains calling himself 'Urgo.' He seems harmless but with him around SG-1 can't go on missions...

Ep Rating: I took ONE THOUSAND screenshots. There must be something about this episode I love. That the late Dom DeLuise plays such a delightful character and we get a light hearted, low stakes episode is also fun. Would have liked more character insight but overall nice

Technical Note: You read that right. Typically at the most I get 800 screenshots, usually on a Daniel heavy episode. But I average around 600 per episodes with some getting as low as 300. As such this thread will probably be long. Bare with me please

The writer on this episode is Tor Alexander Valenza. Tor wrote "Legacy" and "Past and Present." Kinda a mixed bag. The last episode they write is early season 4. They are paired with Peter DeLuise, though, and that partnership did well for "Legacy."

Untouched Paradise? Definitely seems like a job for SG-1 and not the myriad of other SG teams that only exist when they're needed

I love this exchange. Somebody makes an inane comment, Jack turns it into a joke, Daniel has to make it deep and meaningful, and Jack - never one to back down from a challenge - gives it the ol' college try

It's a couple more seasons before we see SGC having any sort of permanent set up off world. It would have been fun to see but they were limited by sets

I love that secret smile Dad Nerd shares with the camera. "He's an insubordinate goof, but he's my insubordinate goof."

Also Daniel is still staring at the thing until he leaves. Michael, what are you doing??

This is so much better than "please explain trial, a word in a language I speak fluently."

Especially since it's a set up for a goof. I will forgive some things when it's just in service of a joke

I love Sam being super amused behind his back

I just love them all sitting around like this. Like they're toddlers having a stern talking to by mum and dad

Unfortunately I can't ding Daniel for sitting like a Bi because everybody else is doing it too

I mean, but that explanation suggests a slight memory of being on the planet stepping through. A more exact explanation would be "We stepped through and showed up at the SGC."

Jack's is goofier tho

I don't know why the MALPs are just invisible to me! First I missed them sending back the MALP in the season 1 finale and then I absolutely didn't notice there were two of them in the gate room

I mean, it could have been. You don't remember anything from the past 15 hours

And get a load of Jack accidentally flipping everybody off

*listens to random person whisper in my ear* Oh. I've been informed that the MALPs are only invisible to me. Everybody else can see them

Jack kindly getting his team some coffee while Sam does and says smart stuff

And Daniel does nothing

He protec, he attac, but most importantly he reac

And thus the old saying of "appearances can be deceiving" turns out to be accurate!

It's been awhile since I've watched the episode the subtitles are lousy at telling me who says what, but I don't think Jack was the one that said appearances can be deceiving

Also I am a disaster bi who enjoys the aesthetic of pretty people holding coffee mugs

One of the greatest all time best gags on human televison history

As somebody who likes my coffee and hot chocolate to be center of the sun hot, I don't know what the fuss is about

These subtitles so rarely do sound effects that I'm always tickled when they do. [gulping] is glorious

I'm missing Daniel making his one contribution of saying "I feel fine."

The more I review this episode the more I realize Daniel barely eeked out a 'useful' in the final moments of this episode...

Look he's got a symbiote that heals him up good. I bet Teal'c never has to deal with roof of the mouth pizza burns!

I'm so disappointed that we didn't get a glimpse of what Teal'c does with his down time

But that might have required building another set and it already looks like they were short on space. They only give Daniel one corner of his office

The moment Sam realized she was a lesbian

Because I think that's actually Daniel's line that I managed to get over the top of Sam

And as we see here, Sam is eating blue jello

Also imma need all y'all to eat something other than dessert. Make sure you eat some vegetables

I love the detail of the guard detail that has to follow SG-1 around. there in the background this entire sequence and they just add to the comedy of the situation, especially here, but they're never explained outright

And now we have to get serious again. Gotta learn that our heroes have something in their brains that can't be removed

Daniel's line was almost the out of context screenshot. There was kinda a plethora

But it's time for SG-1 to shelter in place. Solidarity folks. I've been stuck inside since March

I wonder if Sam is working on that book she complained about never having time to write next season

Bet Daniel is having a better time playing chess than the last time. That one was also a DeLuise/Tor episode...

It's just a good episode

Daniel continuing to make his oh so useful contributions. But the only way they let him be funny is through very dry snark. Couldn't let him upstage RDA...

What if the thoughts I'm having right now are private? And I mean, what other thoughts would I be having? yay, you can't read their memories, but now that you're there actively nothing is secret! I very much would panic, thanks!

Urgo knows what's up. Though again we have the alien entity calling her Samantha

Do... do the writers think aliens wouldn't have nicknames? That they would just love to say long ass words all the damn time?

Is it time to bring out the "relativity gives me a headache" reaction again?

To Daniel: No you're not dreaming

Is that a common personality trait of Daniel's? That he thinks everything is a dream? That was the best you had for him?

We also don't get any wonderful insights into Teal'c. But we do get something later, I believe.

I'm actually surprised that they never call Urgo an 'Id.' I'm like 99% positive they never go that approach and it could have been so easy to

I just had the thought "if he's in your brains and hearing your thoughts, why can't you hear his?"

And then I realized, he is only thought. Anything he think he tends to say.

Jack is quick to defend his beautiful planet

I also find it funny that the word "Fearless" is on the poster near Urgo this entire scene when it's literally his fear of dying that becomes a plot point

His first interaction with Teal'c is to yell 'kree' at him. You know, basically saying "hey, yoo-hoo!"

I love this scene transition

And again I can't point Daniel because this time it's Sam showing off her bisexual nature

Jack got his jacket back on between scenes

I bet Teryl had such a hard time ignoring Urgo. I wonder how many takes ended with her bursting out laughing

After all my jokes about Zippy not being a five year old last episode

It's really interesting to see a character acting like a literal five year old. And the different reactions people have to him.

I'm sure this wasn't the intent, but Janet's face screams "Oh no, this is gonna be bad based on what I'm hearing from my end..."

Daniel: I've died a few times but I have yet to face a need to have a defibrillator used on me...

Also keeping in mind that all Janet is hearing is Daniel's lines. "I think so" "I don't think so."

Jack: Well, you're up Daniel
Daniel: No, I think I'm just fine with not dying, thanks
Jack: But come on! You're our die guy!
Daniel: I think I'd really rather stick to being your linguist and archaeologist, thanks

I love this episode. He honestly is the most likely to survive but still would have been bad

Teal'c: *stood up and walked across the room to turn on the defibrillator and only stopped when Janet shut them off again*

And now Teal'c is tired of this game. Though he's been the only one not to really react so far

I'm wondering if Amanda was just very tired when they filmed this scene. I dunno, there's just something in her manner that reads 'I'm trying so hard to be engaged'

Jack and Urgo: Literal children

I'm missing some screenshots. I had a lot of technical issues when watching this episode with screenshots. I ended up having to watch half of it again

But the classic moment of Daniel questioning "Woof?" It's beautiful

I'm really trying to get through this episode. So have Sam being smart and making smart connections in as few screenshots as I can manage

This happened a lot in "But For the Grace of God"

Just another beautiful gag that deserves to be shared

I will say, however, all of these work so much better in the episode and you really ought to watch it

Janet has no clue what's going on. The last thing she really heard was Daniel saying "Die?"

That poor woman.

And I love that ending scene gag. Urgo thinks it's easy, who wants to die? And Jack is like "yeah but we've all died before... Some of us more than once"

A literal five year old!

I mean, more like a one day old. Maybe a bit more. It's difficult to tell how much time passes

I love Janet and Hammond pulled as close together and as far away from SG-1 as they can manage. Like seeing Urgo might be contageious

I think i'd seriously be with Jack on this one. Please, please, please, let me be alone inside my own head again! Please get the literal child i didn't consent to having away from me!

This is why I said in "Past and Present" that Tor's writing required a director that also had a goofy style. DeLuise can also do serious, but he excels at comedy

I appreciate this scene for showing us how it must look when we can't see Urgo.

Janet just exuding big Mom Energy™ this scene is great. If she'd been able to see Urgo, this episode would have finished quicker cause all she would have done was send him to the corner to think about what he's done

Man, this is such a strangely Jack and Sam centric episode that isn't about shipping or her being Jolinar's host or anything like that

Maybe that's why I like it.

I don't know how else to state "literal child"

But Sam found her mom energy.

And I'm living for the attitude. Give me moar. She's not allowed to lose it like this often because Jack and Hammond are her superiors that she has to listen to

Daniel and Teal'c, standing by awkwardly to show that they are there but not really contributing to anything

Urgo has been in human brains for too long. He's concerned about dicks

I'm skipping a lot of Urgo's whining. But I mean, look at him. Look at how teeny weeny he is

Daniel and Teal'c continuing to be so very engaging this episode

I don't know what Daniel was doing in that shot but I managed to catch probably the most awkward freeze frame

I adore it. Tho is it just me or are his eyebrows super bushy?

I love that they rearrange the group every time they're in this position

And yet again, no point for Daniel because Sam is the bi one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the quarantine room redesigned slightly to be Janet's office. It's got the plant and everything (I'm aware that's proof of nothing, the plant can be moved)

So what we learned from this scene is that Daniel is the only one that can sing

I actually can slightly give Daniel a pass on the glasses front. He doesn't need to see

Huh. I wonder if Urgo comes through clearly because he's an imagine directly from the brain. Does that still have to be processed by the eyeballs?

I mean, this is smart.

But poor Hammond, having to bench his best team.

I'm sure if an emergency happened even with Urgo, SG-1 would still jump into the fray. It's kinda sad they don't do a mission with Urgo. That could have been funny (but dangerous)

Poor Teal'c is like the only one not allowed to show extreme frustration. Though you would think he'd be all "okay, then I need to bounce because I joined you to free my people and I'm not giving up on that because an annoying alien entity."

You're probably getting tired of me saying how great the gags are

But I adore the three talking in unison and then Teal'c chiming in the say the same thing in his Teal'cism way

And then the thumbs up. Read the room, Urgo!

Once again, Daniel just sitting there quietly, not contributing

Why did I say he was useful again? Oh yeah, the next scene or so...

Anybody else play the "quiet game" on long car rides? And then torment your siblings silently to try and get them to say something so you could triumphantly say "I win!"

Did only children get told to play that "game" too?

We have gotten a Sam Carter facepalm. We have truly gone too far

I was wondering about the only children playing the "quiet game" because Jack was a dad to an only child and I'm just surprised he doesn't exhibit more Dad Energy this episode

I actually love the description of "our version of you."

I don't know why this was such a big deal to tell him? Like whatever being is on the other side of the gate already knows you have MALPs and that they need to trick their camera

At least they don't put an Iris over the gate that means anybody that steps through without transmitting a code gets scattered into atoms

I love Sam being amused by Jack distractedly thinking about Maui and women in bikinis.

I really wanted clarification on that question. Does Togar knows Urgo has a name? Or is that a software designation or something? Or is he confused by the software having a name? In which case he'd probably ask "How do you know it has a name?" or "Why do you all it by a name?"

I do appreciate the gag of Teal'c pausing in putting his jacket on and reflecting upon Urgo mimicking him. "Is that how I sound?"

Why wouldn't you believe that?? Sam is very smart. You should always be agreeing with Sam! It should be a surprise if you don't agree with Sam!

I don't know why Jack calls Urgo by the wrong name here when he's already said it correct several times

But I guess Daniel had to correct him on something for funny points

The actual gag? Not funny? The reaction to the gag? Beautiful

Do we ever see them wear forest camo fatigues offworld? I ask because there's one in Jack's closet

So do the Malps instantly teleport too? If somebody dialed this world and just tossed rocks through, would Togar keep teleporting rocks into his base? Would velocity be conserved while teleporting?

I'm asking way too many questions that don't need to be answered

I love Jack and Daniel glancing back at Urgo together. Like "Really buddy?"

Honestly, to me this is the point of the episode that starts to drag a little. It's important stuff, but I kinda want the episode to be over

There is nothing more annoying than someone saying "while I'm being silent."

This is the most awkwardly amazing gag. Where SG-1 has already stopped and then after a pause Togar tells them to stay

Look, I'm convinced that Jack was into Sam long before she was into him. And this is the episode where she went "damn, I like this dork." Like that moment right there were he's like "who doesn't want to eat pie?" She realized she loved him then

Togar is the introvert waiting for an extrovert to adopt him as a friend and it's just him. He made his own extrovert friend

I have so many Daniel shots from this scene. He did so little this episode, I jumped at the opportunity

Seriously, episodes willing to breathe and let the actors just react are so nice. Helps avoid clunky dialogue, too, when you're not trying to fill up time with talking

I sometimes forget that this is the second time this gag is used in the episode, not the first. Because there's been so many goofs between

This is why the rule of three can be so important. It helps you remember. In this case, I think just twice is fine

Sam thinking: Oh I am in so much trouble. I want to plant my lips on his stupid face and I can't because he's a colonel but he is just too damn adorable!
Daniel thinking: I think Sam wants to kiss his stupid face. I'm glad I'm not the only one attracted to his goofiness

I don't know why, but I just love the goofiness of them having to bend over under the devices

I know we all have a child inside of us that we have to deal with but... I really hope Urgo grows up. For Togar's sake :|
