Right now, Taku interviews her in this stream. twitch.tv/otaquest
Starts with the "first song composed" story
Which you all know right? When she was in preschool.
Taku was involved in the remote Tank recording (they talked about this to introduce the program)
Basically how she had music genes from that age and didn't have the knowhow or vocabulary to express it.
Her affinity with music relates to her emotional upbringing
As someone who is easier with music than words
Owned her brass band club in school.
Learned how to play a bunch of unpopular instruments
Wrote music for them because didn't like what they had lmao
This is a good review of the "ear copy"-ness of Kanno's works, basically in school she wrote popular songs into scores for her classmates and played for various bands
Wild that her interaction with her school-age musicians and bands she saw was largely devoid of the pop cultural framework because she didn't get exposed to it at home. Obviously she was the kind of musician that was born a musician but her upbringing made a big difference
Both Taku and Kanno dropped out of college to do music
Kanno left after a week lmao
For Macross Plus location check
Kanno went. But I remember this story mostly from...Itano? I forget which guy was in the trainer jet and blacked out.
When you write high level SF it's hard to get a personal feel of the setting anyways, so I guess Kanno's background didn't matter that much lol.
Hymns and experiencing God translated to Tachikoma is p. much a science fiction trope at this point
Getting into Bebop.
Didn't know Jazz before, but Watanabe got that covered
Tank was supposed to be an insert but director put it into OP
It's also interesting to hear Taku's take on Kanno, with him being a big shot producer and creator too. This is probably the rarest take being offered in this stream.
They have this image blocking out half of the video but occasionally you can see Kanno's fingers poking through while gesturing lol

also appreciate this format a lot more than the other panels they've had so far on Otaquest Connect.
I think she's talked about the way music is written for as a weapon in Macross before but it's nice to hear a more visceral take of it.
Kanno talking about impact from pandemic
Well, nothing you didn't already know. But she is producing more stuff.
When Kanno first went to NYC it was like, what, the 80s?
Also: Broadway is pretty cool go check it out.
Not a lot of JP composers channel New Orleans so this is always going to be an easy thing to score points on.
The panel is over but Taku gives another 2c at the end.
Just an amazing personality and creator and thanks to Taku Takahashi & Otaquest for the great interview!
In case anyone cares:
Concurrent viewer count went from about 400 to 600 during the panel. Itagaki Paru is on shortly.
