I'm no lit major but I've seen a lot confused views on "1984". To me, what made the Party "Orwellian" is it:

1. Didn't allow open debate

2. Restricted language in order to make it impossible to disagree with it

3. Didn't give people the freedom to make up their own minds
When people troll and disrupt free discussion about "2+2", this is Orwellian.

When people seek to restrict definitions so that "2+2=4" is the only possible view, this is Orwellian.

When people say things like my boss should fire me for thinking "2+2=5", this is Orwellian.
The freedom to CHALLENGE well-established opinions and to DEBATE them in a free and open forum after which everybody is FREE to make up their own mind?

This is NOT Orwellian.

THIS IS AN EXPLAINER for academic Twitter concerning James Lindsay (@ConceptualJames). I watched an interview with him where he explains how he thinks about Twitter and I learned a lot! 🤯 So, I wanted to share!!!
The goal is basically to reduce misunderstanding and conflict when interacting with him. So we can all be happier overall. Let me first summarize what I learned from his interview...
James Lindsay's Twitter account is similar to a work of performance art. This is why engaging with it has been counterproductive for many academics and why we should all probably stop doing it on any level.

(I am ironically aware that this thread violates its own rule.)

GATHER ROUND, IT’S DATA SCIENCE STORY TIME 📖with me (Kareem!) ...
I used to work in the stats version of a special operations team. Researchers would come to us if they were stuck on a hard computational or statistical problem, and they needed help. We would basically parachute into their situation and get things done. We got people unstuck!
This might mean:
1. Teaching them how to think about a problem
2. Solving the super hard problems ourselves
3. Building prototype solutions so they could refine them
4. Training them and their people
5. Writing job ads, reviewing resumes so they could put together the right team
