17 August 1988 significance in the history of Pakistanis does not need much elaboration.
This day, Allah came for the rescue for all of us through the king of fruits & a C130.
I had witnessed this day with many of my friends with a disbelief that it is not true
I was at QAU, but barred from education by none other the Zia.
Qau was among the few educational places where students were enlightened enough to challenge a dictator .. the story does not begin or end with my comrades.
There were many before us who laid down their lives too
story of Zia from the day of Ojhri camp blasts on 10 April 1988, started the beginning of an end to a dictator who created nothing but a hell for Pakistanis.
We never thought that the future generations will suffer too after Zia, but it did effected the lives of everyone todate
Events unfolds with the blink of an eye in 1988;
-Killing of Allama Arif Hussaini
-Use of stingers by Iranians
-Junejo factor
-Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan
-Ojhri camp
-sacking of Junejo gov May 88
Events were unfolding and Zia was worried
Words in Pindi & Islo were that, Zia not travelling outside his official residence and not using even helicopter.
May 1988 he sacked Junejo gov and that was the last nail in the coffin
Zia attended after long our uni convocation 30 May 1988, and as usual cursed us as گندا خون
On 5 July we the students of Qau got acquitted from the charges by Islo courts. We were politely requested by court reader don’t celebrate it yet otherwise gov will implicate u any other case.
MRD with PPP as its torch bearer was at the final push for Zia now.
MRD decided to hold a rally and Jalsa at the Liaqat Bagh on 14 August, we Qau comrades were at the forefront & PSF was well part of its organisation
On the 14th of August 1988 speeches were fiery & were directed to Junta to rid of the Zia..
nawabzada Nasrullah did not even minced the Words ..
BB was the last speaker & she hit the nail into Zia’s legacy that day.
We were all very optimistic that something will happen
On 17 August I was in Lahore at my home, a neighbour Wasim Shaikh came to me and hugged my tightly and with a twinkle in his eyes said Zia is dead.
I was shocked & in a disbelief that Zia can’t die & my friend is just comforting me for my terrible woes.
But that was the truth
Zia died in an air crash along with his junta minus Hamid Gul & Mirza.
Mangoes 🥭 were blamed.
PTV was in mourning (read only Lodhi & couple of others).
There were no mobile phones or any fast way of communicating with friends at Qau, my celebration were with world
The world looked different at 6pm on 17 August 1988 in Pakistan.
As if everyone was set free, people had a feeling of joy and some Ziasit were mourning.
Zia’s legacy over a period of time proved more lethal like a termite to ppl of Pakistan.
destroyed everything brick by brick
Mangoes proved out to be the best revenge on behalf of all of us.
Bhuttos suffered the most along with countless political workers from MRD parties
Teachers & Students of Pakistan suffered as a section of intelligentsia , a whole generation was lost. This all costed Pak dearly
My big Thankyou to all who conspired to rid Zia from Pakistan. My special gratitude to mango farmers of Bahawalpur and all those who brought Zia out from Pindi.
My thanks to my comrades for being part of that journey of
