It was lunch time in #Brazil on a Saturday in 1990 when I decided it was time to be born! I grew up in a large city in #SãoPaulo called #Guarulhos, which in Tupi (native language) means “eaters” or “big-bellied people”. Here’s the proof I am “Guarulhense”:

Our #family was not wealthy, but my parents made sure I had good #education, even if that meant sacrificing part of their own life. For that I will be forever #grateful. They made sure I learned how to #appreciate everything I had that money could not buy.

I loved learning about #science in school. Not only because it is #fascinating, but also because my biology teacher, Diógenes (@spock_alvo), had great #enthusiasm when teaching it! His motivation would #inspire me to fall in 💜 with the 🧠! #teachinggoals

Then I turned 18 and it was time to enter #university! Only a few are public in #Brazil, hence the #competition is heavy and the entrance exam, scary! I didn’t enter in the 1st attempt and that's when my life-long partner was born: #Anxiety. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #MentalHealth Image
After a full year studying to pass the entrance exam, I made it in! I was officially entering an undergraduate degree in #Biomedicine in one of the most prestigious universities in Brazil:@Unesp_Oficial. I then noticed my strongest quality: #resilience 💪🏻. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS ImageImage
And to #Botucatu I went (@IBBUnesp)! A small city where I would “adult” away from my parents! 6 months in and I started an undergraduate project in #neuroscience that would give me a taste of #ScientificResearch👩🏻‍🔬 and open multiple doors in the future.🙌🏻💪🏻

The #science world opened to me with #neuroscience #research. Billions of #cells, trillions of #connections to make us who we are! I could not wrap my mind around that - pun intended😝! I was bitten by the curiosity bug and I needed to know more! 🤓🤯🧠👩🏻‍🔬

That was when my horizons were about to expand! During my 3rd year I saw a call for undergraduate applicants to go on an #exchange at @UPorto for 6 months. I decided to dive right in! What was there to lose? NOTHING! I packed my bags and flew to #Portugal.

At that point I was on cloud 9. Studying, immersed in a new #culture and getting to know different people. When my supervisor suggested: why don’t you go to #Spain, visit our collaborators at INCyL @I_Neurociencias and do #research for 3 months? #Salamanca

It was clear that my love for #neuroscience was growing, so why not doing a #MastersDegree? I had the skills and the drive, both of which are essential in #science, but more than that, I had a supportive #supervisor, and THAT is KEY in a #graduate degree! @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
Everything was going great, when a wave of heavy corruption deeply injured #Brazilian #research funding and I was left thinking what was going to be of my #future in #academia. I had to look for a #PhD elsewhere! But where to next?#science #neuroscience 👩🏻‍🔬@IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
Then the power of #networking saved me! A PhD student from @UCalgary I met at #IBRO Conference in #Brazil in 2015 recommended the @hbitoUCalgary neurograd program and suggested some supervisors I could contact for a #PhD degree. It was a shot in the dark.

After #interviews and reference letters, Dr. Richard Wilson welcomed me with open arms to his lab and presented me with an #ambitious #project! I landed in #Canada on December 2nd in 2015. I was ecstatic and very….veeery cold! #BelieveInYourself #Calgary

It was a whole new #challenge, #language, #culture, #weather. The #ImpostorSyndrome kicked in and I felt I didn’t belong here and didn’t deserve that opportunity. My PhD #experiments weren’t working and taking exams in another language was very difficult. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
Everything got better when I met my 2 favorite creatures, Spencer (my husband) and Zola (my furry baby), who helped me pass through it all, including the scary candidacy exam! #Support from your beloved ones is crucial during these times.❤️👩🏻‍🔬👨🏻‍💻🐶❤️ #Canada @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS ImageImage
#Experiments started working again and my love for #research was restored! I then had the opportunity of spending 3 months in #Japan🇯🇵 to learn Patch Clamp with our collaborators while immersed in a new #culture via @MitacsCanada funding! 🤩 @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #neuroscience Image
I am at the end of my #PhD, but if only I could tell the 6-year-old me that that speech impairments are more common than not and that it doesn’t diminish your #voice, I would. I’ve never imagined being where I am doing what I am doing. #BeProudOfYourself💜 @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
My #journey has not ended and I #hope it never does. Life-changing choices that make you move to a different scenario and #challenge yourself is never easy, but you will feel #OnTopOfTheWorld when you nail it 🙌🏼! I am looking forward to my next #adventure! @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
If I could give you some advice it would be to surround yourself with #supportive people who #believe in you when you don’t. Also, #DontGiveUp and follow #BruceLee ’s quote: “be like water my friend”. #EmbraceChange, #adapt with it and #learn from it. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
A big THANK YOU to everyone that participated in my #journey: My #Brazilian and #Canadian #families, #friends, #teachers, #supervisors, #IWS. Always #inspire those around you to do their #best. You have no idea the #impact you can make in people’s lives! @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS Image
