There were a group of companions who were known as
اصحاب الصفة
(Companions of the Veranda)

These Companions stayed within the Masjid as they did not have a home or much wealth, The Prophet ﷺ would provide food for them or take them along when he

Was invited to people's homes. They were knowledgeable as they spent most of their time in the masjid.

Many attribute the etymology of Sufism to the word Ṣuffa which refers to these very companions.

Their life of sincere worship was the highest example that the Ṣufis sought to one in all successive generations of Islām.
Ibn al-Banna the author of al-Mabāhith al-Asliyya

The leaders of the Ṣufis were the people of al-Ṣuffa in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, so know their description. They are the guests of Allāh and Islām, because they were the people who sat with the Master of Mankindﷺ.
Shaykh Aḥmad Ibn 'Ajiība comments:

He says that which the Sufis follow, and their guide in the path of divestment [of self-calculation-tajrid] and abandonment of means, and absorption in the Lord of Lords are the people of al-Ṣuffa. This was a place that the Prophet ﷺ built
in the corner of his Mosque for the poor among his Companions. They used to gather in it. When they were many, their number reached four hundred, and when they were few, their number reached seventy or eighty. This place which was built for them was called al-Ṣuffa. According to
what we have heard that is how they came to be called the Sufis. They were also known as the guests of Allāh, or the guests of Islām. They preferred divestment in order to worship Allāh and to sit with the master of the Messengers. About them, Allāh said: (Do not reject those who
call on their Lord in the morning and the evening.) The Prophet ﷺ accepted divestment and the abandonment of means from them because he knew that they did not want means and were pleased with whatever Allāh decreed for them and with whatever Allāh faced them with of expansion
Or contraction.
