Today's impact statements preceding DeAngelo's sentencing hit hard. (1/9)
Jane Carson-Sandler unleashed a savage rendering of 'This is Your Life, Joe DeAngelo,' categorizing his children and grandchildren as his additional victims before presenting Bonnie, the fiancée he attempted to kidnap at gunpoint in 1970. DeAngelo couldn't look at them. (2/9)
Gay Hardwick used three sheets of paper — one clean, one crumbled, and one full of creases — to represent the lasting damage caused by sexual violence, before and after. DeAngelo couldn't look at her. (3/9)
Gay Hardwick then rebuked misogynist GOP politicians by reading aloud their remarks perpetrating rape myths. Quotes like "Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation" (said @RickSantorum) and "Rape is kinda like the weather. If it's inevitable, relax and enjoy it." (4/9)
Multiple survivors, both yesterday and today, called out the heartlessness and thoughtlessness with which they were treated by the agencies in their respective jurisdictions. (5/9)
The survivor known as "Jane Doe #12" shamed a former investigator turned author for having dared suggested she enjoyed her attack in a self-published 2010 book —
retraumatizing her as a result. (6/9)
DeAngelo just couldn't bring himself to look at the survivors.

As the hearing concluding, one of the livestreams left the audio running, and DeAngelo could be hearing saying to his attorney: “I'm looking at the wall so I can see the victims. I can't look there anymore... (7/9)
"And I have to look at them. You see that six spots on the wall over there? When I look at those six points on the wall, I could also see the victim, with the paper she was throwing and crushing. But I can't look there no more.” (8/9)
These are more words than DeAngelo has been publicly heard speaking at any point since his arrest, and they reaffirm the shallowness, emptiness, and lack of humanity at his core. (9/9)
