So my sweet spot as a writer is ‘coming of age stories’ with young girls. Surviving was about a teen Black girl having to survive the Z Pac, with her estranged older sister as they search for their missing father. I have another horror anthology centering a Black girl &...
...and a super hero story centering Black/Brown middle school girls. Middle school ‘coming of age stories’ r so overlooked ESPC centering girls. Centering Black girls. I been talking about how Netflix screwed the release of this film up so bad bcuz...when do we get these stories?
I’m horrified for the filmmaker. Don’t know her, but here’s another BW who made a film about young girls. And look at this roll out. So the next time another Black woman has a story centering young Black girls, you think this roll out is making it easier, or harder?
Folks have jumped completely out of the window & not only haven’t seen it, but refuse to read the reviews by Black women film critics. Netflix apologized. They should have. But this was so bad. SO BAD. Now ppl in the are talking about the young actresses & pedophilia. Over...
...something they had no control over. We never get these films and now we have one & people are calling the girls fast & thots for being in a dance movie. I just...and what’s really wild?? Whether we want to admit it or not, navigating adults sexualizing you *is* apart of...
...of many girls’ coming of age stories. And I’m talking in real life. So seeing the reactions, from people AND from Netflix choosing that poster for the States & that description for the States is............
So yeah. It’s a lot. A lot. Folks want stories about Black girls & look what happens. Smh
Also? Even after Surviving being nominated for Best Original Show, Shortform in 2016 (I wrote AND directed it), I am having a VERY HARD TIME getting ANY traction on any other the projects I referenced above. All centering Black girls. So excuse me if my heart is breaking ...
...for the BW filmmaker right now. It’s hard enuf to get a damn “Yes take this money”. You’re done & ready to release & now another unexpected (but...expected) hurdle. Through no fault of your own. On all sides.
Whether it’s in film, tv, music or real life, we as a society punish Black girls bcuz we over-sexualize Black boys. We push (hetero...only hetero) sexuality on boys at such a young age & we punish & shame the girls for the boys being attracted to them. So girls can’t do nothing.
So Netflix completely fucked up the release of the film. This is their fault. But who did social media harass & threaten? The director, Maïmouna Doucouré. They harassed/threatened her so bad, she deleted all of her SM. Some of the same ppl tweeting #ProtectBlackWomen today. Mmmm
