An investor unfollowed me, after I openly talked about fundraising experiences, how painful it is & how some investors we met treated us poorly (which I think stems from classism). Te investor seemed like a fit in the beginning, but the aftermath of unrealised deal showed truth.
We didn’t want to raise a massive pre-seed. We were clear on that. We wanted to do a small small round to add to our own money, to launch. They dangled a check over our head for few months keeping our hopes up.
In the beginning we aimed to do a bigger round because we didn’t know better. We got some interest, some horrible experiences as well, so generally we found that we are by heart meant to be more lo-fi bootstrapped. This investor seemed on board.
The deal fell through because we didn’t want to do one more round of fundraising on our own cashflow. He wasn’t ready to sign a check after 2 months of talks. A 25-50k check. Brought on a friend as well who we didn’t think was a good fit.
Breaking point is when I asked - will they still invest if we don’t manage to raise in this new “round” (given bad investment stats for female run startups) - dude just sat their quiet. So we were to be in this alone since we would burn our runway to confirm if we were “worthy”.
I was heartbroken & upset as I really thought that first investor to be genuine & a great fit. Over time he showed he wasn’t. Wasted so much time of ours. Then, he also unfollowed me a month or so later, I believe due to me being vocal about our fundraising experiences.
I think it’s important to see who will be your “ride or die” type of investor, especially when building a #TechForGood company, that looks at longevity & purpose above returns. And to be clear, we are not talking here about investors with no budget, these are millionaires.
Today, I am happy we didn’t follow their lead. I think about how he must have felt called out when I tweeted about my experiences & I am ok with that. He cost us money & energy we could have utilised into other spaces.

Meeting investors & fundraising is a costly process.
This story is from a year ago, but I still carry it as a reminder of why we need to value ourselves more. I should have stopped talks session 2-3 when there was no check, and not continue this charade. He was just not that into it to go alone at it on the spot but we were eager.
I am certain there are some great investors out there, & I am certain the more vetted you are the nicer people become to you or treat you with more validity (which is 🤮).

We won’t sell ourselves short anymore & I won’t silence myself to make sure others like me.
I am sharing this experience to help you assess all the ways to go & that investor route doesn’t come for free and is not the only way forward.

Respect yourself, know your worth, stand behind what you are building and build your own lane.

So, apparently something fell from the sky in Zagreb, Croatia, parts of a plane, or parts of a rocket / bomb. No full confirmation yet.

News outlets reporting that it “allegedly” has Russian signage.

That would be a bit unfortunate, given that Croatia is in the NATO….😬
We will probably know more tomorrow what it actually is.

But it is definitely a very unusual event, during a sensitive time. 😕
Ok look at this, it has the same markings and bolts as the pictures above. Could the Zagreb thing be a Tu-141?

Having grown up in Yugoslavian war as a child, many things I see play out in Ukraine, are almost the same pattern in terms of behaviour.

Here are some things to expect & what I remember doing and would do again if ever faced with war. 🧵👇
1. When there are talks about a potential war, start thinking of places outside of country you could go to.

Wars start quick ⏰ & escalations usually are followed by a key event. In that moment, don't hesitate - leave.
2. ❗Always have your documents ready, passports, birth certificates & medical history.

Especially mental health history (as it can help you not get drafted).

Documents are crucial for any moving around. Prioritise having this ready at home.

My hunch is Putin does NOT plan to stop with Ukraine. Ukraine is the test. Trump probably gave Putin info he needed over those years to restart this.

I also have a hunch US troops left Afghanistan because they had intel about larger conflict coming up soon.
In addition, what we need to keep an eye on is - who will side with Russia?

Will China align? Or someone else? Will it be Turkey? Or even Hungary? Serbia?

It could flip some countries due to (mentally) unstable leadership.
The first clear ally "of a size/influence" to Russia will mark beginning to WW3.

Let's hope nobody aligns.

I’ve recently came to terms that as you improve your well-being, you will have to leave some, if not all friendships that you built earlier in life prior to change. 😕

This feels in particular true if you are changing class position & have less of a scarcity approach to life.
I used to think that if you invest time, money & effort in people, it would motivate for becoming more proactive & change outlooks + outcomes. And to some level it does.
But unless systems they are in support that change, majority just reverts back.
I’ve been very sensitive lately to negativity, anxiety & scarcity that certain friend units share together and have realised that for some it is the only operating mode. This perpetual reality of misery (often misplaced).

Today, we have decided that Chunkie as a company will not seek or take any investments.
We will not make any investor pitch decks anymore, & I will not meet with investors in the future.

Here is my why 🧵👇
1. Let's start with the basics - women do not get funding.

The statistics are so bad that the issue won't change during my life, as it is much worse than this industry is willing to talk about.

It is an issue of class, wealth, racism & sexism.

tech.eu/features/37864…
2. Marginal winners of funding are only those with friendships & relationships inside the circle.

Fundraising as a woman outside of that circle is a dehumanising & invalidating experience. Especially in the stage, we are in. I refuse to put myself through this anymore.

Let’s talk boundaries. 👌
Few years ago had a collegue I decided to distance from as the friendship ran its course. They kept texting me every few months despite me telling them that at this moment I need time to focus on family stuff. 🧵
As I gave 2 instances of explanations where I said that I can’t give attention & taking time to focus on family matters, they persisted to contact me from text to Linkedin. I was short in initial answers and reiterating the same msg that at this time I am focusing on family.
At this point, I started getting annoyed. I thought about boundaries & when it is appropriate for someone to back off. How many signals need to be sent & is it truly on us to be unpleasant or directly crushing to maintain our right to step back?
