BREAKING: Mayor Bill Peduto tells Pittsburgh's Action News 4 there will be "changes" to police command and "It's going to involve higher-ups". He says he was angry with the protester arrest on Saturday, and angrier when police got into confrontation with protesters Wednesday.
Peduto said he had a conversation with Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) on Sunday and expressed his anger. Then Wednesday happened.
I asked if police recognized something needed to change.
"Apparently not," Peduto answered.
Peduto called SERT actions "inappropriate" and says it damaged long-term police/community relations.
Peduto said police wouldn't necessarily lose their jobs, but indicated there would be changes to the command. He said he wouldn't wait for an official report about the incident Wednesday. Added the changes could be announced as soon as today.
“Wednesday night we had the opportunity to take the higher road. And to allow the protesters to my home, and instead, the front page of the Washington Post today is about protesters getting tear gassed by Pittsburgh Police.”
There will be a new incident commander for protests.
Civil Affairs and Public Safety Community Engagement will monitor alongside police.
New oversight mechanisms for SRT team.
All police units won't wear camo gear anymore
Peduto says he's working with Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich and Chief Scott Schubert to expand role of community engagement office and police recruiting, all in the name of rebuilding community trust.

#Fox5DC has learned of another shooting scene nearby that may be connected to this one. That scene is less than a mile away.
A 26 year old was the last surviving member of his family. He was found shot to death in his apt last fall. 9 months later, the DC Medical Examiner still lists manner of death ‘undetermined’. His family believes Zack Freeling was murdered. Story here: fox5dc.com/news/nobody-be…
Medical Examimer’s office declined to elaborate on why Freeling’s death was still deemed ‘undetermined’ suggesting I reach out to MPD, who told me they’re still investigating and urged me to reach out to ME. It’s a back and forth Freeling’s family has been stuck in. #Fox5DC
Freeling’s family has been happy with MPDs handling of this investigation but is frustrated that it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. They’ve started a GoFundMe, Justice for Zack Freeling, to pay for private investigators & a reward, hoping someone with more info comes forward.

FBI agents walking in with what appear to be cardboard boxes. #Fox5DC
Imagine having a bar across the street from Nats Park, gearing up for Opening Day, then being told you have to shut down 20% of your business with 24 hours notice. A reality for @waltersbardc when @DDOTDC told him to take this down during games. We’re live at 10+11 on #Fox5DC
*48 hours notice!! Sorry!!
Walter's owner, Jeremy Gifford says DDOT told him it was a safety issue. And the stop order specifically references taking the structure down for the 3 hours before the game and 2 hours after. Something that's impossible to do with the structure he's built.
