Day 288: #SaveCongoRainforest
Today is #EarthOvershootDay.
That means today is the day when we have globally passed the planetary boundaries of resources for this year. It's August.
We still have 4 months, 1 week and 2 days left of this year. And we've already passed our >>
<< boundaries for resources.
But that's not the whole story.
For the UK, overshoot day came in May. For Australia, it came in March.
For many countries, the world over, Overshoot Day has been and gone.
It is only because of the countries which emit less, mostly due to >>
<< poverty rather than due to good climate policies (in other words for the completely wrong reasons, which is why equity is vital) that global overshoot day is today, rather than a few months back.

We are living our lives as though we had more than one planet.
>>
We are living our lives as though Earth is not unique.

But our planet is not on a factory line. There will not be another one coming along the conveyor belt. Ever.

Some people say we could just move to Mars.
Well, even if that were possible, which it currently isn't, >>
<< what kind of a species abandons the beautiful gift of a planet which it has destroyed, to go and mess up a new one?
And do you really want your grandchildren to spend their lives in space suits on a barren rock, because you sold their chance for living in beauty? >>
We only have one planet.
Stop destroying it.

Earth cannot be replaced.

So stop acting like it.

Overshoot day shouldn't exist.

Let's work towards a world where it doesn't.
