#Nuakhai is a combination of two words, 'nua' meaning new and 'khai' means eat,which signifies "eating of new rice". People worship food grain, special meals are prepared and everyone eats it together. The farmers offer the first produce from their lands to Goddess #Samaleswari.
Community functions called "Nuakhai Bhetghat" are organised at various public places. One can immerse in the local culture of Odisha, witness traditional Sambalpuri dance forms like Rasarkeli, Dalkhai, Maelajada, Chutku Chuta, Sajani, Nachnia, and Bajnia
After eating '#Navanna' bhog (offerings), people seek the blessings of the deity and then do so from elders in the family and locality which is called '#NuakhaiJuhar' in local parlance, a significant part of the festival.
Preparation includes house cleaning and buying of new clothes,womenfolk draw '#Jhoti' to seek the blessings and welcome the deity to their home.Local delicacies like #Pitha, Kheeri, Puri #Karadi and a wide assortment of dishes made with vegetables and pulses are the highlights. Image
#NabannaLagi is the ritual where the ‘#NuaChuda’, a sweet dish made with the rice of the first harvest, is offered first to the gods, and then is eaten by the entire family sitting together.#Samaleswari Temple,at the heart of #Sambalpur plays the central role.
