This is 100% voter suppression. Unless Twitter decides to eliminate its amplification of it, it’s a bad idea to retweet it even to criticize it. There’s a reason it has as an many retweets as comments. Your context will get lost and Twitter’s systems give it velocity and reach.
Now on a positive note, Twitter has been better at taking action and disallowed paid promotion of a post like this. Meanwhile Facebook will allow this false post to be microtargeted to undecided or unmotivated seniors leaning democrat in swing states. Powerful suppression.
Here is the same msg this morning on Facebook. Yes, Facebook places this neutral message to go get accurate info but it’s the ability to surgically microtarget false messaging to vulnerable populations which Google and Twitter have banned and Facebook leadership is failing on.
Reminder this is not a freedom of speech issue...Facebook is hiding behind that narrative. It involves now allowing its advertising and social media tools to provide microtargeting, velocity and reach. “Freedom of speech” does not mean this false message gets freedom of reach.
In fact, microtargeting kills and suppresses a certain type of speech...counter-speech...which happens when communities, family, public see the same message, particularly lies like this, and can have a conversation and present facts to correct for lies.
suppression of counter-speech while allowing a campaign to pay to have false lies injected into the bloodstream of the internet pointed at particularly vulnerable populations is an acute danger to democracy. Facebook knows this. Their employees have said this. They don’t care.
Well done, @TwitterSupport. It happened after only 8,000 retweets which is reasonable for something so sensitive. I’m extremely impressed. I hope the advertisers who unfairly boycotted Twitter because Facebook is a terrible company but they wanted air-cover now reward Twitter.
And to be clear, as of 3pm, Facebook has taken no action beyond neutral link to voter info page. FB is a terrible company. The record will show, once again, Facebook helped spread voter suppression and prevent counterspeech. Congrats employees...Peter Thiel and Joel Kaplan win.
