A thread on the Slavic Pagan creation myth and order of the cosmos.

𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡:
Greetings dear reader and welcome to another Slavic paganism thread.
This thread will be dedicated to one of the creation myths of the pagan Slavs.

Firstly I must make a disclaimer. The whole Slavic pagan community does not subscribe to this version of the myth.

Nor is it the historic word for word myth that the ancient Slavs believed in and told. Fragments that form the basis of this myth have been collected from ancient accounts but it is mostly a reconstruction done by the neo-pagan community.

In general there are two types of creation myths floating around in the Slavic pagan sphere.
The first being creation of the world from one by Rod.
The second being creation of the world by the dual forces of Good and Evil / Opposing forces.

The one that was told to me by old man Sasha back in the Ukrainian country sides was of the first type.
So we will begin there.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇:

The beginning. No darkness nor light. No day nor night. True stories were fiction and fiction was reality. There was no separation. No form to anything. The great cosmic mind was dormant.

Within this void mind flew around little seeds of life that carried the possibility of a future world.
If only the great cosmic mind would awake and show his interest to one of these seeds, everything would be changed.

Suddenly the great cosmic mind did just so. It awoke. It began nurturing one of these seeds with its intent and focus. The seed then transformed into a great golden egg. The great cosmic mind was enamoured with its new creation.

So enamoured that the great cosmic mind infused itself within the egg becoming the Great God ROD. Our ancestor who is yet born. The future of life. The reasons for all reasons.

Within the egg ROD fell into slumber and began dreaming of a magical world. A world in which all things were arranged and everything had its rightful place. A world with crystal clear dawns and luscious wind.

A world with dense forests that were the home to many great creatures. A world with high mountains from which you can almost reach and touch the sky. A world with grand rivers that traveled around the whole world.

A world where beings like him but smaller would exist. Conscious of the world. In awe of the beautiful world. Just like ROD is.
For a long time ROD was dreaming of this world and as the dream continued the egg grew larger and larger.

Then one day ROD realized that this dream must become reality. He fell in love with all he created. Thus Love was born. The great power which will give life to his dreams.

The egg could not contain his loving energy no further so it cracked giving birth to all life. ROD became the mother and father of itself and of everything in this world.

From the face of ROD two chariots emerged. One golden containing the Sun and one silver containing the moon and stars. The two would later race after each other in hopes of catching one another.

ROD then separated the earthly waters from the waters of heaven by a stone firmament. Separated the light from darkness and truth from lies. RODS abundant Love gave birth to the Goddess LADA.

After her birth the Goddess took on the form of a Great white swan, the bird mother SVA. She took flight and flew across the whole world spreading and filling everything with her love.

ROD then began separating the world into three different realms. Creating the heavenly kingdom of Prav/ Правь, the earthly kingdom of Yav/Явь or the kingdom of reality, and lastly the kingdom of Nav/Навь.

To support and connect all three kingdoms ROD planted a seed of a great Oak tree. Later the Oak would grow tall and powerful. Its roots would be firmly secured in NAV, its trunk going across YAV, and its crown settling in the PRAV kingdom.

Disappointment arose in ROD. Everything in this world is mixed up and there was no one to create order and look over his creation after it was finished.
ROD then created the Mighty God SVAROG who would be a helping creator and guardian of order.

With his mighty arms SVAROG lifted the sky above the sea and named it after himself, SVARGA. In the sky he paved the way for the Sun so that it would rise and set. A path for the horses of day to rush after each other from dawn to dusk..

A path for the black horses of night to gallop silently around the sky. This is how SVAROG created the blue SVARGA, a beautiful country in the sky.

But then SVAROG looked down from the sky and saw that below there was no thing, only blue ocean waters all around. There was no raw earth who would act like a mother and feed everything born into the world.

SVAROG then began his search for the earth. He searched and searched but did not find. Until on the seventh day of searching he came upon a large stone rock that came up from the waters. On it lay a white stone and its name was ALATYR.

SVAROG took this stone and threw it into the great ocean waters. Suddenly the ocean began to roar and foam, it boiled and thickened and like this land appeared from the ocean.

However as soon as it appeared it immediately drowned back into the ocean. SVAROG panicked and called unto the great ROD to help recover the drowning mother earth.

ROD answered his call and created two giant wonderful birds.
One fully white, and one black with a red beak. The birds then dived into the abyss of the ocean to save the earth mother.

Three days pass and finally the two birds emerge from the ocean barely alive. Sadly the only thing they brought back were pieces of the fallen earth mother. SVAROG then cried out to ROD to help him revive the poor mother earth.

ROD heard his sons cries and lifted the pieces of earth in the air and with the help of the Sun the earth began to be reinvigorated with life. Then with his great power ROD blew the earth around the world and created land again.

Knowing that land would fall again without support ROD created the powerful serpent YUSHA who possessed monstrous strength. YUSHA slid down into the depths of the earth and coiled himself around mother earth not letting her move out of place.

ROD then created the caretaker of mother earth and all future life, the mother goddess MAKOSH. She was wise and knowledgeable, a noble mistress of the land. ROD provided her with a spinning wheel, and SVAROG provided her with thread.

With these items she began to weave and give rise to wonderful lives. She pulled the threads of fate and tied in knots. Each thread will become reality whether you are an immortal god or a rabbit in the forest.

With Makosh arose two women in labour. Her helpers. These two determine whether Makosh weaved fortune and happiness for a life or misfortunes and sadness.

SVAROG began to make work of the land and to help him with labour he created many giants. Upon his orders the giants began to plant trees, make paths for rivers, and create mountains.

SVAROG himself went into the bowels of the earth, NAV, and created three stone vaults for future underground inhabitants.

SVAROGS next task was to locate the ALATYR stone which he threw in the ocean before. He searched and found it once again. This time it possessed an even more magical aura to it. He transported the stone back to his kingdom in the sky.

He constructed a great altar for the stone and placed it upon it. Suddenly from beneath the stone rivers of life began to flow bringing harvest, health and strength to the land and all the living.

Looking down from his kingdom SVAROG was pleased with the work he did. He then created a sacred fire in his home and made himself a smithy. He created a magnificent throne for himself and on this throne he began to observe the world.

𝐀 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄

This tree was a very important element of ancient Slavic Mythology.
it connected all three levels of the world, stretched with its branches to the four cardinal directions and with its "state" symbolized the mood of people and Gods.

A green tree meant prosperity and that the gods of light were thriving. A withered tree symbolized despondency and meant that the gods of darkness were thriving.

The world tree embodies the unity of the whole world. This is a kind of model of the universe and man, where every creature, object or phenomenon has its own place.

It is also an intermediary between the worlds - a kind of road, bridge, staircase, along which one can go to the other world or to the world of the gods.

This tree personifies the unity and interaction of all three times: past, present and future. The tree trunk represents the present, ourselves. The roots of the tree represent the past, our ancestors. The crown represents the future time.

Our ancestors are the roots that support and make it possible to be here in the present reality. Without them the whole tree would not be able to stand. It's said a person who is cut off from his native culture is like a tree with chopped off roots.

𝐀 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐌𝐒/𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐃𝐎𝐌𝐒

YAV/Явь is the world around us, the reality we currently live in, the manifested world. It is governed by the kingdom of Prav. The way you live your life in this realm will affect both the kingdom of NAV and PRAV.

Because your life affects the other two kingdoms it affects the present kingdom as well due to the cycle of reincarnation that is why this world is also called the world of reveal. Here is where the past and future are revealed.

The dead spirits of Nav (our ancestors) can visit this realm to help and direct people on the right path. Or if the visiting spirits are of an evil nature they can push a person to commit sins.

This realm is also home to spirits and magical creatures like water nymphs, goblins, fairies, etc. It also houses Gods who are in charge of the natural forces of the world like, Stribog God of wind, Makosh Goddess of earth.

NAV/Навь is the afterlife and where our ancestors rest after death. Although this is the lowest realm and is below YAV it should not be thought of as a hell or opposite of heaven. Nor is it some sort of purgatory where our ancestors are “stuck”

NAV is also home to the Dark Gods, which again should not be considered evil Gods due to the fact that they are opposite of the Light Gods. Both Light and Dark Gods serve the same rules that the great God ROD has created.

The Gods of NAV are tasked with the destruction of what has no place in the world of YAV. In NAV is where the reflection of your actions in YAV begins. Beings who have committed true evil will not rest easy in NAV.

They will not be cleansed and transform into evil spirits who push people in YAV to sin just as they committed. However most beings who lived a life of sin will be cleansed here in NAV.

What is interesting about NAV is that despite housing the dark gods and the dead it is the second “lightest” place among the three kingdoms. Meaning that our reality YAV is the darkest of three kingdoms.

NAV is divided into three worlds. The Etheric, Astral, and Mental. The etheric realm is a reflection of reality and is also inhabited by creatures, plants and animals similar to the ones here in reality. The others are self explanatory

In some beliefs there is a division in NAV between good souls which go to the light NAV also called SLAV and bad souls which go to dark NAV. However, in all talks of this realm it is said that this realm does not possess any suffering.

This is because all of the suffering is done in our current reality YAV. Due to this the distinction between light NAV and dark NAV seems strange.

PRAV/Правь is the kingdom that is closest to the primordial source of light (ROD/Great cosmic mind). This is the home of the light Gods, the world of eternal truth/laws, the world of super-consciousness and supreme wisdom.

After the souls of the dead have their rest in NAV they travel to PRAV where they are examined by the Gods of the heaven. Depending on the life lived previously they decide the level of suffering to place you in the next incarnation.

Memories of the past are cleansed but the spiritual growth attained in previous lives remains. The goal of each cycle is to progress until full enlightenment is completed
Once completed you are removed from the cycle of incarnation and join the kingdom of the Gods in PRAV forever
