Before our week, I want to tell you how @BlkInEngineerng started. After the George Floyd murder, a small group of Black women contacted @rbeyah to gain access to @arlnetworkorg members for a call to action. (Join ARLN if you haven't). #BlackInEngineering 1/
We met the following Tuesday w/ almost 60 Black engineering faculty in attendance. We determined that a #BlackInEngineering movement was needed. Major aspects of our work was focus on media and on policy changes. 2/
People volunteered to champion efforts. We produced a video to honor our fallen Black brothers & sisters w/ a poem written by @drleroylongiii. @ColeySPACE edited the vid. Watch it here- 3/
We needed a call to action. Two associate professors (@PhirstDown & Audrey Bowden) led the charge and produced a gorgeous document that is our Call to Action Sign it here! blackinengineering.org/action-item-li… 4/
We have so much support behind the scenes too. Our allies and advocates are amazing. They are sharing the doc, commenting, and pushing change forward. We had folks sign up for podcasts, articles, & so much other engagement. 5/
Thanks so much to @QuincyKBrown for supporting us. She served as a model and sounding board for our efforts, resulting in our joint #BlackinEngineering and #BlackInComputingWeek (Check us out on Twitter this week). 6/
Thanks to @calvinmackie for calling @DrCABerry, @DrTahiraReid, and me out for making good trouble. (Ironically, we have all been professors in Indiana.) We balance each other, and our partnership works really well and we move everything forward. forbes.com/sites/calvinma… 7/
Last week, Carlotta, Tahira, Cullen, Audrey, and Brandi Jones (@USC) facilitated a session for MEP directors and Deans @NSBEconvention. Thanks to my @SpelmanCollege sister @RochelleLWmsPhD for allowing us to share our CTA with the masses. #BlackInEngineering 8/
This movement continues to move. We honor George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many more who can no longer speak for themselves. As engineers, we stand united to support our communities and each other. We demand that our organizations strive to be anti-racist so we can thrive. 9/9
