My thoughts on Hong Kong reinfection report.

The key question is not whether COVID reinfection occurs. It is whether reinfection will be severe. I have said before that severe reinfection will be very rare, and reinfections won’t cause a repeat of the pandemic. NO need to panic
Reinfection occurs if the virus changes or with high viral dose exposure. Here they found the strain of SARS CoV-2 was different. But as expected the immune system worked and the patient was asymptomatic.

@DrSidMukherjee @Rfonsi1 - your thoughts...
HK has very few cases of COVID. They went to universal masks before anyone else in the pandemic. They are being correctly cautious.

Here is an informative thread.
Reinfection should be a consideration for vaccine development. In terms of repeat vaccinations like we do for flu.

But the bottomline is that after natural infection, the risk that COVID will pose a mortality risk of the present magnitude are slim in my opinion.
If SARS CoV-2 does recur and cause a second infection it won’t be COVID. It will be a different disease with a different prognosis & impact. Let’s not confuse reinfection with recurrence of the same disease.

Our immune system has been around for a long time. It’s not naive.
For now we should assume that spread from a person with reinfection is as likely as someone with first infection. So the risk of spread and causing COVID to other people remains. So it’s good to consider necessary policy adjustments and take protective measures.
