Another long thread: what does it mean to be a centrist/moderate? Does this mean that one is completely in the middle on every topic? Or does it mean that they are simply indecisive on many issues? 1/
Centrist do take positions strongly on many issues. There is typically a calculated appraisal of each particular issue. Centrists are able to hold conservative or liberal ideas at the same time. There is a respect for the ideas allowed by others. 2/
In some moments, there could be a more strongly held viewpoint and in other moments a more balanced viewpoint. This is different from libertarianism which (to best of my knowledge) is “fiscally conservative, socially liberal.” 3/
Rather, there is a mix of conservative and liberal principles held on social, economic, and government topics. Centrists take things on the issue. In this way, they are not obfuscated by ideology. This can make them “politically homeless.” 4/
Conservatives and liberals have ideological platforms. Centrists do not necessary have an ideological platform. Their “platform” is the issues themselves. Not strictly abiding to an ideological platform allows for more freedom and diversity of thought. 5/
In my view, centrists are better positioned to seeing the uniqueness of each individual. They are not filtering people through an particular ideological lens. Rather, their political calculus is to examine ideas on their own merits. 6/
Ideology has its pros and cons but in current society it is often ripe for critical blind spots. I believe we should encourage a society of critical thinkers based on the merits of ideas not ideological systems or with as hominem attacks. 7/
Respect for ideas and the individual who holds them through human connection and relationships should be valued highly. I propose we do away with pernicious, parochial, and reactionary ideology and foster a society of moderate centrists. Fin.
