Some notes about his career.
catsuka.com/focuson/satosh…
This is a student work by Satoshi Kon (early 80s).
He graduated from the Graphic Design course of the Musashino Art University.
In those days, he was used to make paintings.
A photo of Satoshi Kon (left) and Katsuhiro Otomo (right).
Kon was an assistant of Otomo on "Akira" manga.
In the japanese edition of final Akira manga (issue #6), there's a "Special Thanks to Satoshi Kon" credit.
I believe that Kon was more than an assistant for Otomo on the final pages of Akira.
First mangas by Satoshi Kon had a strong Otomo's touch.
Here's a preview of his "Kaikisen" (Tropic of the Sea) manga (1990).
Satoshi Kon even made a manga based on an original story by Katsuhiro Otomo : "World Apartment Horror" (1991).
Some layouts by Satoshi Kon for "Roujin Z" 1991 animated feature film (involving Otomo, again).
Thanks to Toshiyuki Inoue @181ino for the photos.
Satoshi Kon worked on "Memories" / "Magnetic Rose" directed by Koji Morimoto (1995).
Even if he's not credited for that, I'm pretty sure that Kon also worked on the final version of the storyboard (which has not the Morimoto style).
Some pages and designs by Satoshi Kon from his "Seraphim" manga (1995). Story by Mamoru Oshii.
In 1995, Satoshi Kon also made another manga : "OPUS".
Unfortunately aborted after the bankruptcy of Comic Guys magazine.
In 2017, producer Masao Maruyama said that he wants to make an anime based on "OPUS" manga by Satoshi Kon.
It would be a great opportunity to complete another aborted story by Kon.
Making-of "Millennium Actress". Serious business for Satoshi Kon.
Satoshi Kon's storyboards are masterpieces.
Over the years, he added more and more details.
On Paprika's storyboard he even designed texts effects on screen.
Some comparisons of Satoshi Kon's storyboards, between original hand made drawing and final version (made on Photoshop).
It's a heartbreak to think that "Yume-Miru Kikai" (Dreaming Machine) final movie by Satoshi Kon will never be completed.
Note : awesome characters-designs were made by Yoshimi Itazu (Miss Hokusai).
Souvenirs of "Kon's Retrospective : One Thousand Years of Momento" exhibition (2011).
You can find most of these materials on Catsuka "Focus On Satoshi Kon" page :

I also made a Youtube playlist with a lot of videos of Satoshi Kon :

Thanks to Laurent Koffel for his wonderful Kon's photos.
I miss you, Mr Kon. See you in my dreams.
