I get that conservative pundits hate commentators mocking their voters, but these analyses of why this red meat strategy could work (a redux of the *Sanders* strategy of hoping for vast numbers of non-voters to vote and vote for him) are... incredibly tortured.
The much simpler story is the correct one: A strategy that’s aimed at 35% of the electorate is a shitty strategy that leads to you losing, if you’re not running against Hillary Clinton.
Also, this hypothesis of a 17% relative turnout increase among Trump’s base, with no offsetting rise in Biden’s ... this is not how negative partisanship works. Base activation strategies activate the other side’s base even more strongly than your own side’s.
