Marrying your adopted son, ordering his murder, becoming the center of an embezzlement scheme by posing as a church leader, holding blood rituals... all behind a façade of goodwill

the Flordelis case: one the most insane stories coming from Brazil (and that's saying something)
The basics: Flordelis dos Santos de Souza is a federal deputy from the state of Rio de Janeiro. She was previously known for her work as a church leader (and for having 55 - yes, fifty-five - children. The vast majority of them adopted)
in 1993, she met Anderson do Carmo, who she eventually adopted. Anderson then began a relationship with Flordelis' biological daughter, Simone. They eventually broke up and Flordelis married Anderson

Making Anderson his own stepfather? Dark (2020)

Flordelis made the headlines last year after Anderson was murdered. Police soon caught up that something was amiss and that the case was not a simple "robbery attempt gone wrong", as the family initially described.

Now things start getting trippy
Lucas and Flávio, both sons of Flordelis, were initially arrested for the murder. Lucas purchased the gun, while Flávio was the one who shot Anderson - over 30 times - as the man arrived home
So there had to be a motive.

According to the police, there was deep, intense internal conflict within the family. Anderson held power over the family's finances and Flordelis' political career. He was supposedly very controlling about both money and household chores
Flordelis wanted out.

She texted one of her sons "What can I do? I can't get a divorce, that would scandalize the name of God"

But apparently, murder wouldn't. So here's how it all played out
There were SIX attempts at poisoning Anderson by sneaking arsenic into his meals. This screenshot of one of Flordelis' daughter's phone is particularly insane.

"poison that's legal"
"poison that kills"
"assassin where to find"
The so-called "family" was very, very bizarre.

The "first generation" of adoptees (8 people) had better food and accommodations in the house. For the remaining, the relationship with Flordelis was far from motherly. Most said they felt used.

And there's way more to it.

A man who lived in the house in the late 1990s described being forced to write Bible verses with his own blood and being kept into isolation for a week as part of his initiation in what he called a cult extra.globo.com/casos-de-polic…
A select group within the family were considered to be "fallen angels" by Anderson, and Flordelis' duty (as... a Cherub) was to "save them"

Anderson would also allegedly ask for Flordelis' "permission" to have sex with one of their teenage daughters
Lucas, the son arrested for the murder, told the police Flordelis had a baseball bat at home to hit whoever she deemed was misbehaving.

Her biological daughter, Simone, used to serve as her own personal spy in the house. extra.globo.com/casos-de-polic…
But Flordelis wanted none of the blame

She promised Luan, yet another son (THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM) a trip to the US if he gave up telling her in. To Lucas, she promised a more comfortable stay in prison if he told investigators she was not involved
AN ADDENDUM because I'm getting this question a lot

Flordelis is 16 years older than Anderson.

According to this piece, they started dating when he was only 14 years young, while she was 30. huffpostbrasil.com/entry/o-que-se…
SO the question is: is Flordelis arrested?

Nope! She's a federal deputy which means, under Brazilian law, that she has a whole lot of priviledge when it comes to trials. Justice is slow, even slower when it comes to powerful people noticias.uol.com.br/politica/ultim…
oh and I just remembered the part where one of Flordelis' former church pals saw her drunk out of her mind in a swing (the sex thing, not the jazz thing) club extra.globo.com/casos-de-polic…
oof. I'll update the thread if I come across some other excruciating detail about this whole thing. feel free to let me know if i forgot something. I most likely have. this has been a RIDE
APPENDIX: pictures of Flordelis with some of the Brazilian political elite

Here's our resident murderer with Michelle Bolsonaro, the first-lady
Flordelis with former justice minister and president Bolsonaro's crush-turned-nemesis, Sérgio Moro
A movie about Flordelis' life was released in 2009 with a star-studded cast. Anderson even served as executive producer. None of the actors received any money, and the profit from the box office would reportedly be used to buy a new house for the family
With Flávio Bolsonaro, one of the president's sons. This entire video is amazing, btw. it juxtaposes her sermons (mostly about how good & christian she is) with the details of Anderson's murder

HER ALBUMS ARE ON SPOTIFY, TOO. She even has a song called "he survived" which obviously became the butt of many jokes about how that was probably the first thing she sang after Anderson survived six poisoning attempts
