It's so painfully obvious that they didn't bring back M2 for this one, which is a shame, the Mana collection was beautiful.
There's just no comparison. M2 had this (optional) screen filter and the border was original art that was themed to the game. This SaGa product has a decent palette (GB should be low contrast, not pure black and white) but this weird smartphone border with buttons on screen?
.@algcifaldi just said that it looks like the screen and buttons on a digital camera from 15 years ago and I can't unsee it now
It's absolutely to save money, this is not going to be a big money-maker for them so it's hard to justify spend. And given how many of the replies here are basically "I'm going to buy it anyway" it's obviously the right call for them.
If you've seen me ramble at GDC you know that I think this is a death spiral, where legacy content released cheaply creates the perception that the games are, indeed, cheap, so the more you do it the less opportunity you have to create something meaningful with them.
I happen to be of the mindset that video game fans are, among media, the most hardcore consumers that exist, and that they not only will spend money on a premium product, they crave it.
