Cultural influences
Coloured people are a multiracial ethnic group that are the products of multiple cultures sewn together. Our heritage stems from Black and Asian minorities that were brought on ships (yes we were slaves too) from Madagascar, Equitorial Guinea, Indonesia etc.

As a result of this, our skin tones, hair textures, and accents differ tremendously depending on our direct ancestors and what areas we grew up in. THUS, coloured culture will differ from person to person.
Coloured culture is our accents. Ranging from the thick, Capetonian coloured accent to the regular, English (“normal”) accent.
Coloured culture is what our ancestors created. We invented Koesisters, Ghoema music and the Klopse. We draw inspiration from this and it is embedded in our dna. We invented Afrikaans and the slang that goes with it. Phrases like “awe”, “auj” “ma se kind” are part of our culture.
Coloured culture is our myriad of hair textures. From straight (“glade hare”) to thick, bushy hair we celebrate anything and everything in between by making use of various hairstyles passed down from our different ancestors.
Coloured culture is our food. Fish and chips, Potjiekos, pap en wors, vetkoek, curry, paptert etc. We are MULTIcultural so our food is varied and diverse. Coloured culture is stokies, rollers and our music- Dr Victor, The Rockets, Kaapse Klopse etc.
Coloured culture is throwing huge celebrations for Matric Dance’s, Baptism’s, Confirmation’s, Wedding’s, and 21st’s. Within each of these celebrations, aspects from our ancestry are drawn on and merged.
Coloured culture is coloureds. Our existence is our culture. Our accents, hair, food, celebrations and music make us who we are and form our culture.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” model for coloured culture. It’s what we make it.
Personally, I don’t think it can be appropriated BUT it hasn’t been respected by non-coloured people for a while now.
