This week, the United States Postal Service warned 46 states and Washington, D.C., that it cannot guarantee all ballots for the November election will be delivered and processed in time to be counted due to overwhelming demand. Image
Thomas J. Marshall, general counsel and executive vice president of the USPS, notified the states of this possibility last month, explaining that their established deadlines for requesting and returning ballots are ‘incongruous’ with the Postal Service's current bandwidth.
Some parts of the country are expecting up to 10x the normal volume of mail-in ballots due to the pandemic, putting extra strain on the cost-cutting org. A spokesperson said that the org is simply ‘asking election officials & voters to realistically consider how the mail works.’
