Here's a cool fact: US police catch only 47% of violent criminals. 33% of murderers are never caught.

There are 250,000 unsolved murders in the US, growing by 6,000 per year.

In 2019, the FBI announced 609,275 missing persons cases.
The FBI also estimates, based on a system that literally cannot solve murders, that there are only 50 active serial killers at any one time.
Given how pigshit awful US policing is at catching criminals, how that is literally *not even its mission*, odds are that the vast majority of murders simply never show up in the system except as missing persons.
In 2018, the FBI estimated a mere 16,214 homicides.

16,214 murders, across the whole country, over a whole year.

In that same year, 612,846 people went missing.
Odds are, the vast, vast majority of murders not only never get solved, but *never even show up in the system as murders*
If you murder in the US, the odds are good you will never get caught. Not only that, but the odds are good that murder won't even show up anywhere other than a missing persons report, if that.
The US is such a spectacularly failed carceral state that the vast majority of murders are not only unsolved, but not even identified as murders.

Because police do not exist to solve crime, but protect property.
