A short thread on different Covid-19 symptoms.

Interesting to hear Prof @timspector on Inside Science.

Particularly since I've been reporting via
covid.joinzoe.com for weeks.

Interesting to hear more about the wide range of symptoms you can get. The classic 3 symptoms at eg gov.uk/government/pub… were the most discriminatory symptoms in people I'll enough to be admitted to hospital.
2/9
In milder cases - and especially in children - other symptoms are as or more common. Eg fatigue, loss of appetite (skipping meals), rashes, diarrhoea.
3/9
When the purpose is identifying cases to prevent transmission, it's important not to miss cases because the case definition us inappropriately tight.
4/9
When, as a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control (CCDC), I identify an exposure, I can, based on risk assessment, either recommend that everyone exposed should self-isolate etc; or…
5/9
… or I can ask ask them to be extra vigilant, and to have a reduced threshold for testing etc.
6/9
It would be useful to be able to point these increased vigilance people to a gov.uk website explaining that for 2 weeks after exposure, ANY significant new symptoms are an indication for testing.
7/9
As "NHS" (privatised Sitel/Serco) "test and trace" starts to detect more people with confirmed Covid-19 it becomes increasingly important to give best advice to contacts.
8/9
I hope that @PHE_uk and nhs.uk will facilitate this by adding other such presentations to their Web sites. (And make them easier to understand than at present.)
