A musician would need to generate 23 billion streams on Spotify to earn what they're paying Joe Rogan for his podcast rights (assuming a typical $.00437 payout per stream). In other words, Spotify values Rogan more than any musician in the history of the world. Sound fair to you?
(1/2) Check out the thousand responses from Joe Rogan fans below. They ALL are very worried about a world in which Rogan might get less than $100 million, but not one expresses even passing concern for musicians who have a million-streamed hit & won't even make minimum wage.
(2/2) The point of the comparison was to draw attention to the plight of musicians (who, I note, never even got a chance to negotiate these ridiculous streaming rates). I don't know Rogan's work and wasn't judging it. But if his fans are any indication of his values...whoa!

More evidence that streaming economics are broken. Netflix has an enormous audience—yet it has had negative cash flow every quarter for 5 straight years. It already owes $15 billion in debt and now needs to borrow billions more. Their spending spree will soon end.
I am not saying Netflix will disappear—only that the strategy they are pursuing won’t work. Streaming won’t go away, but it will experience painful austerity, suffering & downsizing as it learns to live within its means. Same is true of music streaming. Just wait and see.
For example, Netflix showed up at the Frankfurt Book Fair a few days ago, on a spending spree to buy up film rights for a bunch of stories—many little-known or by unproven first-time writers. This is great for authors, while it lasts—but it won't. It's like the dotcom bubble.
