In Minsk today, a column that looked to be more than 100,000 marched up to Lukashenko’s Independence Palace and demanded he resign. Here’s what we saw:
The day began with columns of people — there’s safety in numbers in Minsk these days — converging on the city center, cars honking as they went by
Heeding the directions of Telegram channels organizing the protests, people headed toward Independence Avenue because the original meeting point, Independence Square, was blocked by the police
A column of riot police marched through Lenin Avenue to chants of “shame!” and retreated via a side street
A sign: “No, I won’t hide in the bunker,” Lukashenko says. “My potatoes are in there!”
With the city center blocked off, the huge crowd collectively turned around and walked toward the Stela war monument
The Stela was surrounded by razor wire and soldiers in camouflage with rifles on their backs
The protesters kept walking another 3/4 mile past the Stela, toward Lukashenko’s Independence Palace
At the palace, the protesters were met by an imposing column of riot police, a water cannon, a truck with an (empty) machine-gun nest and, a few hundred yards back, at least 3 armored personnel carriers.
The protesters occasionally taunted the riot police. Some of the officers seemed tense. Others filmed the scene surreptitiously on their smartphones.
The protesters occupied the decks of a nearby parking garage, a bit like the loge levels at the Bolshoi
This was the view from the parking garage, with protesters flashing the victory sign, one of the symbols of the movement.
As storm clouds gathered, some people turned back, and turned on their phone flashlights. Musicians played “Try čarapachi” by the Belarusian band N.R.M.
