American founders rebelled against British _parliament_, not the _crown_. They were less "democratic" than the home country in many ways.

American Founders were all about the royal prerogative, which they sought to recreate in the presidency, and were they ever upset with the crown it was because it failed to exert its authority over the parliament, rather than the other way around.
It's not a misnomer to call the American revolution a conservative revolution. Nor does failure to accept the dumb social revolutions since the '60s somehow go against the spirit of America's founding. We may be too late to turn back now, but it's not from historical necessity.
Reading the pre-1960s takes and, yes, the default interpretation is that the Founders rebelled against the British legislature but not the British crown. Our "history" is revisionist history, more narrative than fact.
