A video in Ubisoft's new game appears to link Black Lives Matter to terrorism. Yesterday, Ubisoft staff expressed outrage on an internal message board. In one message seen by Bloomberg News, the game's director apologized and said they'll remove the video bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The director of this game and manager of the studio behind it is Charlie Guillemot. If that name sounds familiar, it's because his father is Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO. Charlie Guillemot graduated university in 2014 and became studio manager in... 2014
Over the weekend, a number of Ubisoft staffers posted furious messages about the video on the company's internal forum, Mana. One message with a couple dozen 'likes' starts off with the sentence: "I am sincerely exhausted by everything related to Ubisoft."
BTW, Ubisoft has been planning another Ubisoft Forward video game reveal stream for the very near future (next week, I believe). Once again, their timing is impeccable

Game companies say they use contractors to fill temporary jobs or to rotate people in and out of projects as needed. But at some studios, contractors wind up staying for years, strung along by the hope of full-time employment as they struggle to make a living wage.
At Microsoft, contractors can only work for 18 months max. (They can then come back after a six-month break.) Microsoft uses so many contractors that this limit leads to a lot of attrition — and for games that take 4+ years to make, like Halo Infinite, it has been disruptive

Hascoët resigned from Ubisoft in the wake of allegations that he facilitated a culture of sexual harassment. For many years, he also determined Ubisoft's entire portfolio. Why were so many Ubisoft games criticized for feeling so samey? They were all overseen by the same guy

Among many details I learned while reporting this piece: the developers of Assassin's Creed Odyssey wanted Kassandra to be the only playable lead, but Ubisoft's marketing team and creative lead Serge Hascoët wouldn't allow it. Women don't sell, they said. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Here's an anecdote about Serge Hascoët, one of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot's close friends and, until his resignation this month, chief creative officer for decades. With one word, Hascoët could greenlight or cancel a game. Devs would spend months preparing for "Serge meetings."
