1. A brief thread on @j_braceras' @GlobeOpinion piece on the Electoral College. bostonglobe.com/2020/09/01/opi…
2. She asserts that Lincoln only won in 1860 because of the Electoral College because "the vast majority of Americans voted for someone else." In fact, Lincoln won the popular vote by a lot, though not by a majority. He came in first with 40% and Stephen Douglas second with 29%.
3. She claims that it is "false" to assert that the Electoral College was created to protect slavery. She ought to take up her argument with James Madison.
4. Braceras asserts that the Electoral College was intended to protect the minority. But that's not how we protect the minority in a democracy. We protect them by acknowledging rights that may not be abridged. That's what the Bill of Rights is for.
5. Giving the minority more political power than the majority isn't protecting the minority — it's violating the most basic principle we have in a democracy, which is one person, one vote.
6. Elsewhere in @GlobeOpinion today, @johnellis24 argues that Trump can lose the popular vote by as much as 7 million and still win the Electoral College. Does anyone believe that kind of massive disenfranchisement is sustainable? At some point the majority will revolt.
7. Yes, the Electoral College really is an anti-democratic 18th-century institution set up to protect the power of the slave states. It needs to be abolished. I wrote about it for @wgbhnews in 2016: wgbh.org/news/2016/12/0… -30-
Addendum: John Ellis is actually at @41jellis.
