there are lot of misconceptions on high refresh rate monitors, so, quick facts!

• the eye doesn't have a "max framerate"
• the eye can absolutely distinguish between 144Hz and 1440Hz monitors

(thread)
the eye is continuously picking up light - if something is moving really fast, then it won't just get a "frame", it will smear in a blur, the size of which depends on the lighting conditions and the properties of your own eye

so - what if something is moving fast on a monitor?
try moving your cursor in a large circle quickly

do you see gaps between the cursors?

double your refresh rate and you would get one more cursor in the middle of those gaps

quadruple and you get three cursors covering that gap

see where this is going?
I'd be able to fit about 12 cursors in those cursor gaps on my 165Hz monitor before I would have a hard time distinguishing continuity, and now we're talking ~2000Hz

"higher than 165Hz doesn't make a difference" is just not true
there is of course the question of whether or not going beyond 500Hz+ is the way to go

it's very likely not, as rendering 500fps is expensive as heck

but, a little motion blur could cover that delta between frames for the last bit of visual fluidity!

another good demonstration!

display drawing tablets is a great example because you directly interact with the monitor in place, where you can see and compare the difference not only in fluidity but also latency, in this case between 60Hz and 120Hz

in case you want to compare and see the latency gain with increased framerate
