A thread: Independent reviews like the one @SenDuckworth requested of the @USGAO are critical for institutional accountability and transparency, esp. for programs that are designed to reduce/eliminate violence like sexual harassment and assault. 1/
The stakes are incredibly high. This review is within the context of the killing of Spc. Vaness Guillén and death of Sgt. Elder Fernandes, both of whom had reported (to family and Army officials, respectively) exps. of sexual harassment and assault. 2/
Each reported a fear, or actual experiences of, retaliation and, in Fernandes’ case, “bull[ying] and haz[ing].” The name for these fears and experiences of retaliation/reprisal/bullying/hazing? #InstitutionalBetrayal. 3/
#InstitutionalBetrayal – when institutions violate the trust of or fail to fulfill their duty of care, through either deliberate actions or negligence, for those who depend on the institution for support, resources, or in some cases survival. 4/
A number of studies have found that #institutionalbetrayal following harm or violence exacerbates the psych and phys harm of the exp. itself. Veterans who exp'd institutional betrayal after military sexual trauma had greater odds of attempting suicide. 5/
Because no change can be made w/out data about the scope of the problem. If the military – all branches – does not have relevant information, how can change happen? Reports of relation and mishandling of reports are made at even greater risk than reporting the assault itself. 7/
Understanding the what % of service women and men exp. #institutionalbetrayal and #institutionalcourage, and what the most common types are, gives a starting point for change. And this system very much needs drastic change. 8/8
DARVO is having quite a hot summer. While we’d rather see the end of DARVO than all of its cameos in pop culture, we’re here to educate about DARVO (the brainchild of our founder, Dr. Jennifer Freyd) to diminish its power. Read on! @jjfreydcourage 1/10
The linked piece by Elizabeth Gulino makes a key point: the power of DARVO is magnified when a powerful person wields it as a weapon. To be clear: DARVO packs a wallop all on its own. But when the DARVOer has more social power than the victim, DARVO’s impact becomes quantum. 2/10
Gulino writes: “When celebrities respond to an allegation of abuse or sexual assault in an exceedingly public and open forum, such as on social media, they are taking advantage of a power imbalance inherent to the medium, and they're harming victims everywhere.” 3/10
Today, we’re musing on some recent headlines involving @NBCUniversal and parent company @comcast. They have important things to teach us about the intersecting issues of workplace harassment, institutional betrayal, and institutional courage. Let’s dig into it. @CourageforAll
First up:
On May 12, The Cut published this piece by @bridgetgillard. Linda Vester broke her silence in 2018 about Tom Brokaw’s harassment of her in the 1990s. In this piece, Vester calls for an external investigation to truly “clean house” at NBC. thecut.com/2020/05/linda-…
According to The Cut: Vester @lindavester1 has been interviewed by the NYS AG’s Office (also: @megynkelly, @BrookeNevils, and @addie_zinone). On May 4, NBC Chairman Andy Lack was fired for reportedly pursuing affairs with female employees and “fostering a culture of impunity.”
Hi folx. In this thread, we share a recording of Dr. Jennifer Freyd’s keynote address, “Addressing Sexual Abuse with Institutional Courage,” from the @NashvilleSAC conference this week ⭐️ Link only available til June 8 ⭐️ Let’s dig into it. @jjfreydcourage@CourageforAll

Here is a link to JJF’s talk ⭐️ Link only available til June 8 ⭐️ so maybe a nice weekend activity. The link contains many more talks & resources on intergenerational trauma, ACEs, sexual trauma in communities of color, resiliency, and healing.
Jennifer Freyd: “It’s a particularly painful moment for our country, where I would say betrayal that has been long present—but also long denied—is coming out in the open.” @jjfreydcourage
Backstory: this week, we’re seeing a lot of media coverage of efforts to discredit @RonanFarrow 🤔 It seems that some (ahem) are displeased by Farrow‘s efforts to expose sexual violence and a coverup culture at NBC. His book, Catch and Kill, includes brave @BrookeNevils 💚

As reflected in the Page Six piece, @BrookeNevils picked the perfect label for any bad-faith effort to discredit people who tell the truth. From the research lab of @jjfreydcourage, here’s what DARVO stands for:
