1. Folk are calling/emailing me about Jessica Krug and the notion of Black womanhood and how it can be usurped by others. Short answer--power. slightly longer answer: commodification and capitalism.
Also add that the academy tends to want to populate itself with an image in its likeness. So if you Black step back if you white you all right. Proximity to white brings with it a type of capital in the academy. Think colorism mix with elitism. and you get Jessica Kurg
Now let's get to the nitty gritty. White women and the ideology of white womanhood and how this ideology depends on the use of Black women, their labor and way of being. Think Ms. Ann
Dear, dear Ms. Ann. Power and proximity to white male= Ms. Ann. Now let's circle back to the academy. The academy is a place where white men and white male ideology is dominant (do not read this as anti-white men. I'm talking about an exercise in power).
The academy is a type of "plantation" in the sense of how it can operate and how the borders (think who gets in) are policed. So Ms. Ann has to find ways of getting closer to power. She wants to be a part of the structure. to do that, she needs a commodity.
And, more importantly, she needs to control a commodity. And this is where Jessica Krug comes in. She embodies Ms. Ann.She extracts the labor of Black women and Latinas while working to control their labor. Which brings me back to the simple answer. Power.
And that my dear friends is how we get #JessicaKrug
