My folks had a clearout and found my earliest foray into journalism. This was the very first school magazine at @Oldmachar, a new school back in 1989 when I was in S3. And it’s decent! Loving the front-page homage to @TerryGilliam
From the welcome by co-editor and creative driving force, Kelvin Murray. Aw, shucks. 🧠
My main contribution. The tone’s a tad despondent, but people will have come to their senses 31 years from now... won’t they?
It was 1989...
We had our own cartoon strip.
And a really good interview with the Holmes and Watson of the day, Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. S5s Fiona Purvis and Chris Longstaff overcame nerves and really got their interviewees to open up.
I like getting pupils’ voices into @TesScotland. This piece (in 1989, remember) about the pressure of exams sounds uncannily like pieces from pupils that we’ve run three decades later. Has much really changed when it comes to exams?
The vibe of this place was perfectly captured by The League of Gentlemen...
Justifiable indignation from Morag Purvis and, here, Lisa Thomson when writing about whether there were equal opportunities for girls and boys.
The local chipper’s lunchtime deal for school kids - a long-standing Scottish tradition.
Strong local flavour to the football quiz ⚽️
Student voice, 1989 style. 🚲
Poetry. Why can’t teachers be calm like a lamb? 🐑
Editors’ favourite
A sense of social conscience runs through the mag. After pieces on environmentalism and sexism, now comes one on homelessness.
A final word about editor Kelvin Murray, who was in S6 (I was S3.) My first editor was warm, funny, enthusiastic and gently encouraging. I have no idea what he went on to do - is this him? kelvinmurray.com
(I don’t think there ever was a second issue but, hey, we got one out there)
