Heywood to Mount Gambier railway was one of two railway lines built by Vic and SA govts following an agreement in 1912 to connect to each other’s railway networks. 5' 3" opened 1917.

Mount Gambier to Wolseley was built as 3' 6" gauge, opened 1887. Was converted to 5' 3" in 1959.
