Part of the Communist Party of China since its founding, Xiang Jingyu became the first woman elected into the central committee and headed the Women’s Bureau.
Xiang Jingyu helped build the first national women’s movement, mobilising strikes of thousands of women workers in silk and cigaratte factories, and women’s support of the great 1925 Canton-Hong Kong strike.
Xiang Jingyu believed that education was central to women’s liberation. In France, she first read the Communist Manifesto, then in Moscow’s Toilers of the East University she saw socialism being constructed.
Xiang Jingyu was captured by French Concession police in the post-Shanghai massacre hunting of communists. She was executed on International Workers Day in 1928, dying a communist till her last breath at age 33.
