Continuous civilization means civilization without break. Today's every modern civilization suffered a break while shifting from traditional one. Civilization break is a period when civil wars, violent revolutions, riots take over the society.
After that traditional values are forcefully replaced by modern values. Population gets homogenized. Those sticking to the former are treated as outcasts. In India, such widespread civil wars never happened, despite being a diverse society.
Reason?Indian society is a service based interdependent society. In a village, Nai, Sunar, Lohar, Teli, priest serve the entire village irrespective of the status of the person. Everyone had job, and no one remain unserved.Though untouchability came out as unfortunate sideeffect.
This segmental interdependence kept India away from Civil wars. In 1947 we saw a glimpse of such civil wars when fanatics of some foreign faith tried to break away. It led to partition of the country. But the Idea of traditional India remained intact.
India is slowly shifting from traditional to modern society, without any break. PSUs are flag-bearers of this change. PSUs serve everyone, without judging the customer on the basis of profitability. They served the rich and the poor alike.
People have a sense of right over PSUs. They demand service from PSUs as their right without worrying about the money. This kept the public discontent under check. Downtrodden, backward, poor though remained unserved many times, but didn't burn the factories down.
Because they believe that they have share in those. They know that its a matter of time and they will be served. Though efficiency took a hit, but with better technology, monitoring, and rules that issue could've been resolved.
Had India been under the private ownership since the beginning, there would've been little islands of prosperity in the sea of poverty in India. Only those from whom the capitalist can earn profit would've been served.
People would've lost their faith in the nation a long ago. They would've revolted violently. Glimpse of such revolt was seen in form of Naxalite movement in 1960s. Had this been a general phenomenon, the dream of Churchill of broken India would've come true.
PSUs have trust of the people. PSUs are the reason people still have trust in the government. Blatant privatization would lead to rise of wide discontent among people. The smooth transition of Indian society from traditional to a modern one would turn into a bumpy ride.
A civil war is long overdue in India. Handing over control of national resources to profit mongers will make sure it happens. This government is playing with fire. Blind supporters are ignorant of this fact. They call our demands a charade to save our jobs.
They believe that PSU employees are lazy, corrupt and waste national resources. Many of us may be so. But that is a functional problem, not a structural one. Efforst should be to make PSUs efficient, not erase them.
